Guest guest
It's hard to believe that it has been 4 years since that fatefull day the Earth stood still. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing. I was working in surgery, doing cataract cases with Dr. H. Someone came in and asked me if I had heard what had happened in NY. Well, no, I didn't. We were playing relaxing music on CD's because the patients are awake for this surgery. So, I turned off the CD and put a radio station on with the volume really low. My heart sank when I heard what was happening. When the surgical case was over, the surgeon looked up at me and asked if I was ok. I told him that we had been attacked. Two passenger planes had hit the WTC and one hit the Pentegon. We all just didn't do anything. Didn't talk, didn't move, nothing. The patient was sitting up on the table and was in shock as well. We recovered ourselves and took the patient to the outpatient department where she would be prepped for discharge. Through out the day everyone was in and out of the doctors lounge watching what was happening. I had a friend who was stuck in Germany and another who was stuck in Chicago. My dad was suppose to fly to Germany on that day. He canceled his flight two days before. My mom was sick and he just had the feeling that he should stay with her. The airline wouldn't return all his money because he cancelled so close to the departure date. Well, in light of what happened on Septemeber 11, all flights were canceled and everyone was issued full refunds. He got the rest of his money back. We looked at his itinerary and he would have been on one of those flights that crashed into the WTC. There isn't a person in this country who wasn't effected by this in some way or another. The eariness of the silent sky just got to me. I live near an airport that also has a military base on it. I am near the fly over zone so I hear the airplanes, though not as loudly as if I were in the flight path. The silence was unbelievable. I never realized how much air traffic there was until there was none. Then, one day, all I heard was the heavy sounds of the large carrier's and the Black Hawks. I don't know what sound frightened me more, that or the silence. Every time I think of what happened, it brings a tear to my eye. Now, watching the special on the Discovery Channel about Flight 93 has the tears streaming down my face. In mourning for their loss, for what they had to endure, for their families. Yet, with pride for over their getting past their fears and fighting back to save lives. I wish to put out a prayer for those souls who left our precious world and have moved on to the next. I also want to put out a prayer for the families and friends of those we lost. Finally, I wish to put out a prayer for my family, here, in this group for today and for everyday. When I count my blessings, I count each of you. Good night....Marina
Guest guest
Marina, I also watched the special about Flight 93. It was quite moving. I didn't know about all of the phone calls that people on the plane made. This is a very sad time, remembering 9/11, and also seeing the plight of the hurricane victims. Last night I watched a special featuring different singers and groups, trying to raise money for them. Some of those songs had me crying, especially the one that Etheridge wrote especially for the occasion and sang a capella. Guest guest
Dear Marina, You summed up my feelings exactly. I still remember that morning vividly too. I had just given Ron his birthday gifts and card, just before breakfast. We had the radio on, then turned on the TV in time to watch the 2nd plane hit the WTC. It took a couple of years for him to want to celebrate his birthday again, but I told him that it was good to find something GOOD in the day. That morning we stood out in the back yard, listening to the silence. It seemed even the birds were in shock. We live near - AFB (well, about 50 miles, but that's pretty close) so when a jet flew over and created a sonic boom, the lady who lives behind us and was also outside came over and was very frightened, thinking we were being attacked. We reassured her that it was probably one of ours (and later found out it was probably AF One) and told her " who would attack Connersville--it's too little, too poor, and no one could find it! " She laughed, and we felt better too. I'm happy that your father's guardian angel kept him home. Blessings, Judi
