Guest guest
They may be required to provide it. I have a friends daughter and they have an educational consultant he said the school had to provide her daughter with addtional group time after school.  Subject: IEP related services -- do they have to be provided during school hours? To: Date: Tuesday, February 23, 2010, 2:55 PM  Due to his OCD, general anxiety, etc. my son has had an IEP for several years. The only " service " he has been getting is a supplemental class or academic lab period where a special ed teacher helps with organization, time management, interfacing with teachers and if need be my son can use his " extra-time " then. My son benefits by this service & wants to keep it. BUT, as a highly intellectual, high performing, high-school sophomore, he no longer wants to sacrifice one of his school periods for this, preferring instead to take a regular class. His annual review is coming up and we need to make a decision about next year. I want to see if the school can provide this service outside normal school hours (e.g., after school or in the evening). This would meet my son's needs as well as keep him under an IEP. A by-product of dropping the service would be that he would be moved to a 504 plan. Can the school be REQUIRED to provide this service outside normal school hours?
Guest guest
Dear Lynn-  Doubtful, especially as this is a choice your son is making, but each district is different. My daughter has a 504 and has had one for 6 years, it helps enormously when she is overwhelmed because it allows her to go to the guidance office if she becomes too anxious (among others things). Good luck, M Subject: IEP related services -- do they have to be provided during school hours? Guest guest
Hi , I'm not sure about this. It usually depends on your district. If you try the  IEP_guide online group they are awesome at letting you know what you can and cant fight for  in your state. Guest guest
Perhaps if it is framed as after school tutoring it could possible be advocated for. A few private schools I know of Barnstable Academy in NJ do provide after school tutoring. My daughter goes to a special needs middle school and there is no after school tutoring. She doesn't have a language class instead there are other special classes for her. You could have this service as a pull out on different days 3 days a week instead of 5 and perhaps it at different times. Or perhaps have an in class support person help your son in one of his most difficult classes instead of a pull out (he may not like the special attention though). I would not let go of my daughter's IEP under any circumstance. It was too hard to set up in the first place. best of luck, Pam > > Due to his OCD, general anxiety, etc. my son has had an IEP for several years.
