Adam Glover takes a look at the timeline of the virus.... 18 March - Mexican health authorities begin picking up cases of flu-like illnesses. 12 April - A 39-year-old woman infected with swine flu dies of severe viral pneumonia in Mexico. 21 April - Two Californian children are confirmed to have swine flu. 23 April - Mexican death toll now rises to 20. A further 7 US confirmed cases. 25 April - Health Officials in Mexico say there is now more than 1,300 suspected cases and 81 deaths " probably linked to the virus " . First suspected UK case proved negative. 27 April - Spain's Health Minister confirms Europe's first case of swine flu. Mexican death toll rises to over 150. World Health Organisation raises threat level to phase four. First 2 confirmed British cases. 29 April - Mexican flu seems to be stabilising with only 7 more suspected deaths. Germany confirms its first 3 cases. US confirms first death outside Mexico. 2 May - WHO confirms 15 affected countries, 615 cases of swine influenza infection worldwide. 3 May - Columbia confirms first South american case. Portugal confirms first case. 13 May - WHO confirms 33 affected countries with 5,728 confirmed casesof swine flu. 18 May - 107 confirmed UK cases. 6th US swine flu death. 8,829 cases with 74 confirmed deaths. 23 May - 122 confirmed UK cases. 86 worldwide deaths. 27 May - WHO confirms 48 affected countries and 13,398 cases. 186 UK cases confirmed. 95 deaths worldwide. 8 June - WHO confirms 73 affected countries and 25,288 cases of swine influenza infection and 139 deaths worldwide. 11 June - The WHO raises its Pandemic Alert Level to Phase 6, citing significant transmission of the virus. 14 June - First death outside the Americas confirmed by UK Health Minister. 163 deaths worldwide. 18 June - Number of UK cases rises to a total of 1760. 19 June - US confirms 21,449 and 101 deaths. A death rate of 0.49%. 27 June - 607 more UK cases bringing the total to 4, 322. 29 June - First UK death outside Scotland and first in England. 1 July - An American holdaymaker staying in a Carlisle hotel is confirmed as the first case in Cumbria. 3 July - A 19 year-old Londoner with underlying health issues becomes the fourth UK death. 6,162 cases in England alone. 8 July - 4 suspected cases in Copeland including 2 Whitehaven School students. 9 July - A 23 year-old Barrow shop worker becomes the first confirmed case in South Cumbria. 10 July - A further 1,000+ cases in the UK bring the total to 9, 718 cases and 14 deaths. 12 July - NHS Cumbria set up Tamiflu and antiviral collection points. 15 July - 7 Sellafield workers are being told to stay at home after they are suspected of contracting swine flu. 16 July - 500,000 Flu Vaccines are to be sent to Cumbria in order to vaccinate the county.
