My daughter Dalia (age 14) was diagnosed with severe OCD 20 month ago and

her OCD is

still not better. She is mainly at home. What is worse, 20 month ago she was

at least physically healthy, now she is not (the biggest problems are joint

pains).

From January she is on third antidepressant, Anafranil (she tried Prozac and

Lexapro before, first one caused mania and second one severe depression).

From the end of August she is also on Lithium, because she had always severe

mood problems (at least this medication works, but her psychiatrist still

doesn't believe in children bipolar). However, since she started taking

Lithium several health problems appeared.

She has her blood checked for thyroid regularly and our doctor always said

that it was OK. Just recently I have got hold of her blood results and it

seems that her thyroid results are not OK, at least I cannot understand what

is happening there.

As I founf out, over time her TSH value increased: 2.72 Sept.22 and 4.08

Jan.4 and it seamed that Lithium is affecting her thyroid (as it in many

cases does). It seemed that she had a hypothyroism and also her symptoms

suggested this (joint pains, depression, constipation, fatique, depression,

cold intolerance, hot flashes, some hair loss).

One week ago she had a check done again for TSH and free T3 and T4, and the

test showed a sudden drop of TSH (1.41 Feb10 and FT4: 15 pmol/l and FT3: 3.8

pmol/l), but her symptoms remain. She started to take Anafranil in January

(now she is at dosage 100 mg with no improvement in OCD symptoms).

Is it possible that Anafranil caused the drop?

Our doctor refuses to treat her for hypothyroism, although her free T3

is right at the boundary level.

Thank you for any advice you may offer,

Marcela

My 2 cents...Lithium would be the suspect on the thyroid problems here.
