Multiple sclerosis symptoms can include loss of (in our experience, temporary)

vision in one or both eyes, and vertigo.

rheumatic Eye Symptoms

The last two weeks I have developed a new symptom: temporal loss of vision.

I have had about 6 episodes where my eyes seem to go totally out of focus

and I lose vision in one or both of my eyes. This lasts from 2-5 mins or

so. Has anyone had this happen with any of the autoimmune diseases? The

eye dr ordered a MRI which I will have done on Mon. My local rheumy said

that this can happen with lupus. If it doesn't get better he mentioned

Imuran. I am going to e-mail Dr Whitman who prescribes doxy and

clindaymycin for me and see what he has to say. I've been on doxy for

almost 5 years. I have been going down on prednisone which I've beenon for

almost 8 years and I do feel like I am flaring each time I reduce the

prednisone--down to 4 mgs and do not want to ever increase it!

Any suggestions/info would help--thanks!

I know that RA can cause various kinds of inflammation in the eyes, but

I have a different problem. The muscles in one of my eyes have

apparently gotten weak and my eye drifts outward when I'm tired or I've

been using my eyes a lot. When I use the computer, I get nauseated and

see double after only half an hour or so, and the same thing happens if

I read, but not as quickly. The RA does cause a LOT of fatigue, and by

6-7 pm I have trouble getting my eyes to focus much at all.

The opthamologist says it's not related to the RA, said I'm a bit

farsighted and that's what's straining my eyes, and gave me glasses.

So far they've only made the situation worse. I'm having a really hard

time getting anything done at work, and I'm totally nauseated and good

for nothing by the middle of the day (unless I go home and lie down for

an hour or two, that seems to reset the clock).

Anyone out there ever heard of eye muscle weakness connected to RA? Or

do I just have two unrelated problems?

Hi.

Please speak to your doc, and write down ALL your medical symptoms,

even if you think they are RA or medication related. I have been sick

for 5 weeks with what started as an " eye problem " . I was worried it was

the Plaquenil or the RA, and I had my eyes checked out as well. The

eye doc found nothing.

For me, the problem is with my left eye. My right eye is fine, but my

left eye doesn't track as well as it should. If I keep my head straight

forward and look to the right, I am okay for vision, but if I try and look at

all towards the left, my vision becomes distorted/double....and of

course, this affects my balance when I walk.

After having two exams by a Neurologist, bloodwork and an MRI, it was

determined that I have Multiple Sclerosis.....and it is in NO WAY related

to the RA. Just bad luck, is all.

Please get a second opinion to rule out anything more than just eye

strain or irritation from the RA or your meds. It's always best to get

things checked out that don't resolve themselves and that don't seem

to be getting better with a recommended form of treatment.

Take care,
