Guest guest
this is excellent, Sue...very detailed and I am sure will be extremely helpful for parents who are exploring the idea of treatments/therapies/supplementation for their child. I think that Sam's story will give hope to parents whose babies are still going through the health issues that many of our kids start out with.. Danny had a lot of problems when he was a baby, too, and it always amazes me when I look at him now because he is so healthy and strong and bright....and I never dreamed that would be possible. (and the pictures are great;-) He really is a beautiful boy..KathyR I had a great time looking through old photos to make this post interesting so you will have to go to the blog to see them all. I wanted to share our journey with diet and supplements. The listserves are always discussing supplements and protocols and I know all the information can be overwhelming. This is our experience, Sam’s journey and his current protocol. Each of our children are unique and their needs are different and I do not intend to suggest any particular protocol but instead to share how we came upon the one we are following. I hope that by sharing the process it helps others to figure out their children’s needs. Have a very Happy New Year!!! FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2011 Our Journey With Diet and Supplements Sam came into the world a whopping 10 lbs., 2 oz. and I originally took that as a sign that he was not going to be like the typical child with Down syndrome because from my reading most were born early and they were small. He was only a day early and that was because I was induced and he looked like a toddler when he was born. It should have been my first clue that Sam was not going to go by the book, Sam's journey was going to be his own and he didn't want me to get comfortable with anything written or pictured in a book. Now looking back, how could I have possibly thought that there was a typical child with Down syndrome?? They are all so very unique. As I researched Down syndrome and tried to understand our new reality I quickly became side tracked as Sam decided to keep me focused on him. He had feeding issues, he seemed to struggle with breathing while he slept. His feet and hands were often so blue or purple that I would hide them in his pajamas so people wouldn't stare. … To finish reading this post please go to: www.suemayer-specialneedsmom.blogspot.com Sue MayerMom to Sam (11) who is genuine, unique and perfectly “Sam” www.suemayer-specialneedsmom.blogspot.com
Guest guest
Thanks Kathy! I know when Sam was little and he struggled so much with speech, we kept setting Christmas as the time he would begin to talk. I knew he had a lot to say and at age 11 he is talking more and more but I remember being scared that he may never speak and because of the brain injury he may not be able to walk. I laughed about that while we were hiking in Maine and he talked my ear off and as he began to ride his bike. We’ve had yet another set back with Perthes but I know Sam will come through this too. I hope parents of younger children are encouraged and that they know we were right where they are and our hindsight is their gain.
