Subject: family support group?

Hi! I have a 6 year old boy who has recently been diagnosed with OCD. I live in

a suburb outside of Seattle and I would love to start a family support group in

my small community. I have a friend who lives near me who has 2 children with

OCD and I'm sure there are others. I have noticed others mention that they have

started support groups. I would love some suggestions as to how to get one going

etc. Thanks so much:)!!

Hi ,

Welcome to the group and I think it's great that you want to get a support group

started. I recently started a parent support group here in New Jersey. If you

have a state affiliate, you may want to contact them and let them know that you

are interested in setting up a group and they can publish your contact

information online and possibly in a newsletter. I also heard(they found me on

the NJ OCF website) from a NJ clearinghouse for mental health support groups.

They are affiliated with one of our local hospitals. They sent me a stack of

information on how to start a support group, possible meeting locations, etc.

Our first meeting was in December. There were just three of us. We met at a

restaurant. We ended up staying for 3 1/2 hours! Just talking--very casual. We

said we felt like we'd known each other all our lives.

The next meeting was in Jan and my daughter, on break from college, joined us,

as did a friend(who also has OCD) that she met last year when she was on break

from her home college. We had two new parent members that day and the meeting

ended up being a huge success with everyone sharing experiences.

Good luck with your group, let me know if you have any questions. The benefits

so far in my experience have been immeasurable.

Hi ! I'm sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. I actually

live in Snoqualmie. I would love to get a support group going but I'm having a

hard time getting started, my brain has been a little scattered latley. I may

have to put it off for another year. In the meantime I would love to talk. We

are really new to this OCD stuff and I find it really helpful to talk to others

and hear their experiences. If this is something you are intrested in you can

email me directly and I can give you my phone number. I hope things are going

well for you and your kiddo!
