Guest guest
I think each person is different with medications. I know many people that can take Depakote or any of the various vaporic acid meds. Abby is not one of those kids, she even had hallucinations on depakote. It was just not for her. No one can really tell you how the drug might work, have to just try and see what happens. I had many people tell me that Dilantin would be horrible for Abby. Not only does it control her seizures, but once we got her dosage right she has had no problems or side effects. It's all trial and error. Guest guest
Aimee, Our daughter has been on Depakote for probably 11 years. It was the only drug that controlled her massive seizures. The only side effect she has suffered is weight gain. She is not horribly heavy but we do have to watch everything that goes in her mouth. We also have to get regular liver checks but so far everything has been fine and she is seizure free which is the important thing. What would be the reason for use as I know they are using it for different things now? Ruthie
Guest guest
Haven't tried it for our girl, buy my cousin has serious depression and some co-habitating mental issues. Depakote was by far what helped her. Don't know of any side effects, and she was mid 20's. HTH, Debi
Guest guest
One of my clients is taking Depakote, it has been a wonder drug for him! It was the second one they tried, and I know different meds work differently for different kids, but for this little guy, it has been amazing how much progress he has been able to make now that his seizures are properly under control. Guest guest
Amnesty, No seizures...just an abnormal EEG for Ella. But the neuro says depakote will regulate the brain waves and help her processing...and of course she tempts us by saying it could help Ella speak! Guest guest
Ruthie, They are using it to treat abnormal brain waves picked up on EEG for autistic children. I guess the abnormal brain waves shooting off can cause processing problems and make speech almost impossible, so the idea is that if depakote can stop the shooting abnormal brain waves, Ella could process and motor plan better, and therefore possibly speek...I am scared to try such a stron drug for so many possiblies... Aimee What serios side effects are there...could it leave ella worse off or cause a regression? Ruthie & Robbins wrote: Aimee, Our daughter has been on Depakote for probably 11 years. Guest guest
Well, this kiddo definitely has seizures, but they did tell his mom pretty much the same thing about it also possibly allowing him to process things better and hopefully speak. Too soon to tell yet I think, but he did say " book " recently, which was a first for him! Only real word he's said yet. Guest guest
Have you tried any natural methods? Taurine can help normalize brain waves, as can magnesium. Also, did you have the test before you started the diet? Sometimes the diet can reverse it, I know Allie stopped having what looked like absence seizures. Fish oils are also really good to help the nervous system. That said, I wonder since she's having abnormal brainwaves if the med might prevent her from developing full-blown seizure activity? I'm not trying to scare you by any means, but by adulthood something like 40% of people with autism have some form of seizures. One of my goals has been to prevent that from ever happening with Allie Kat, don't know if we'll be able to or not. I've wondered if the anti-convulsives and anti-psychotics make it less or more likely. I'm sure it's depending on the kid, like everything else with autism. I know it's a scary decision, I hope you find the one that's best for little Ella. Debi
Guest guest
I guess I worry that maybe Ella is a guiene pig for using depakote for abnormal eegs, by my neuroligist...and that worries me. The way she said " Ella is a perfect canidate for depakote " , it felt odd. Not to mention she doesnt have children and shes a bit driven by her grant from UCI and her Autism developement center here in Orange County... I hate the idea of putting Ella on meds, but Im not sure why! Guest guest
If she is not having behavior or seizures then why put her on anything? A lot of people have abnormal brain waves, doesn't mean that they need to be put on medication. However, if you think she is having seizures then you might want to repeat the EEG. Also, if a neurologist is quick to prescribe meds and doesn't have a good reason? Then maybe it's time for a new neurologist. Guest guest
Aimee, go with the gut. Mamma guts are way better than any lab test!
