Thanks, , your story is inspiring... I'm glad you didn't give up. I have to

confess that I've pretty much given up on getting any real help for my OCD and

depression. I have the same medication side effects issues that my daughter

does. I'm 55 now, but when I was in my late twenties I was hospitalized several

times for OCD. There was no Anafranil then - it was just being tested - so I was

put 350mg. of Imipramine and Navane and I gained 100 lbs. The meds saved my

life, my sanity, and my marriage, but they cost me something, too. Now I only

take 50mg. of Imipramine and I'm definitely depressed all the time. I can live

with that, but I want more for my daughter.

Thanks again for sharing.

Please don't give up on yourself either. There are so many options out there

now that weren't there when you or I were diagnosed. I am 47, so not that much

younger than you. If nothing else, think of the message you are sending to your

daughter (especially if she knows much about your issues), if you give up on

yourself. I say this not to make you feel guilty, but to encourage you to keep

trying to get help for yourself. I have had a bad habit through the years of

saying " I can't handle any more... " which my husband hates. For my kids' sake

and my own, I am now trying to reframe it as " I don't like this, I don't want to

handle any more, but I can get through it... " It really does make a

difference:)

My ever-helpful mother suggested when my husband and I got married that we might

not want to have kids due to my history of OCD and depression and significant

mental health history in his family (his dad was bipolar). We chose to roll the

dice; we have been lucky in some things: Lynn is very intelligent and creative

and strong-willed and unlucky in others: she has OCD, is highly anxious, has

already been through depression, and is strong-willed! My mother also fails to

see that both she and her mother had subclinical symptoms of OCD.

Thinking of you and your daughter,

I have OCD also, as well as depression and panic disorder. My ex has it.. Two of

my kids have OCD also.. I know it is very hereditary. Both of my parents have it

as well. Out of the bunch, we ended up with one kid without it.

Personally, my OCD has gotten easier with age. I'm 41 now, and have pretty much

learned how to manage it,(except for the rigidity- I could use some work there)(

we all know that it is not so easy to teach a small child how to deal with it)

When my daughter was 5, she used to rage for hours on end, all due to the OCD

thoughts she had. I never knew why she was raging, because she wouldn't talk. She

ended up getting hospitalized twice due to her severe behaviors. As she got

older and started to talk and open up more, I have noticed a dramatic

improvement in her as well.

My 8 yr old son, on the other hand is very out of control with his thoughts.

I know how hard it is to keep an open mind and try to stay optimistic!!

Hang in there!

Hugs

Judy

You're right, and you've echoed what my own psychiatrist told me earlier in the

week (about the message I am sending to my daughter) - that is a very good

reason not to give up. It's also interesting that you said your mother fails to

see that she and her mother had subclinical symptoms of OCD - my mother is the

same way!! I don't know if my grandmother exhibited OCD symptoms, but my mother

definitely always has - everyone sees it except her!!!

Thanks again,

(mom w/OCD, 18 yr. old daughter w/OCD)
