I know it's a big long shot but my son had the flu mist on Dec 27th and suddenly

" came down " with OCD on Dec 28th. After reading the wonderful info from you guys

I am highly suspecting PANDAS and just thought I'd throw the flu mist question

out there. Our time line is flu mist dec 27th, OCD began Dec 28th, fever Dec

30-31st.I noticed that doctors that treat kids with PANDAS reccomend against flu

mist, and have read parents accounts of kids with PANDAS having bad episodes

after flu mist but not as a possible cause. I know it is probably not connected

but as a parent who is brand new to this I'm searching.

I don't have a ton of info on PANDAS but have read many times that it can be

viral as well as bacterial.  So, I would say there is a definite possibility

they could be related.  I have learned with OCD that you have to seriously

consider anything that may seem coincidental.

Has your son had the flu mist before or is this the first time?

Have you gotten an appointment yet with anyone who seems to have a good

knowledge of ocd -- and is your son showing any improvement at all?  I know

this is all so hard.

From " Pure Obsession OCD and PANDAS "

For two years [after first PANDAS outbreak], we had no issues. My son has always

worried about right

or wrong, but definitely no obsessions. Then in October, he was not

feeling well, went to the doctor and didn't test positive for strep though his

two cousins (who he had slept in the room the night before) did. Also

around this time, he had the flu shot and H1N1 shot (a decision I regret).

Needless to say, we have now been through

a month and a half of pure heartbreak. My happy third grader is so

worried about sex (he is not even sure what it is, just knows there are

privates involved) that he tattles on himself constantly for his

thoughts (a few weeks ago it was violent thoughts). His only obsession

is to tell on himself - very painful for us because the thoughts are

disturbing though we know it is the OCD talking.

That’s what our daughter does, also. Tattles on herself for everything she

has ever done or thinks she might have done or might do or say in the future

wrong. She is so troubled by it, it hurts.

Hey Beth - That kind of OCD is called " scrupulosity " . Our daughter had it as

well. You can do ERP therapy for this to help, do you have an ERP therapist? We

used the tool of DELAY to help with this, and it really did help her so much. We

also used the tool of CHANGE IT UP. Have you read " What to do When Your Brain

Gets Stuck " ? It's a great workbook for kids - and was helpful for me as a

parent as well. It's not expensive, and is on amazon, so you can order on-line.

If you google " scrupulosity " you'll find a lot of info on confessing and worries

about doing something wrong.

Meg has PANDAS, so we'd still have very bad exacerbations, but we'd still not

trade ERP for anything. It is an important part of our daily life, even when

she is completely healthy.

My son does it also, almost nonstop. He tattles on himself about what he did ,or

may have done. He gets confused by it.

These poor kids!!

I started the workbook with my son yesterday. I'm not sure if it's clicking with

him though, although this morning when he was going on about " gargabe stuff " I

asked what he needs to do about those thoughts and he asked me if he should

throw them in the garbage, so maybe!
