Guest guest
We have been using Honeycombs liquid GB for a long time. We like it, but cannot get it easily in China! So I started poking around for more info about other brands of liquid and capsule GB that are available at Iherb.com.Here are two companies' answers: 1) Nature's Answer and 2) GAIA1) Customer Name: Liora Pearlman Customer Email: lioracc@... Customer Phone: Ginkgo Biloba Non Alcoholic Extract liquid Hello, I have a question about Nature's Answer Ginkgo Biloba liquid extracts.I hear that all Ginkgo products should state something like "24% flavonoglycosides and 6% terpine lactones" or "Ginkgo special extract EGb 761" because " as their level of Ginkgolic Acid is reduced to under 5 ppm (parts per million). Non standardized products can cause serious allergic skin reactions due to higher amounts of Ginkgolic Acid content. Standardized products also guarantee a fixed amount of terpene lactones, including Bilobalide, which is the active component in the therapy for Down Syndrome." Can you give me more information about Nature's Answer Ginkgo, especially the Alcohol Free Extract pictured here? http://www.iherb.com/Nature-s-Answer-Ginkgo-Alcohol-Free-Extract-1-fl-oz-30-ml/5437?at=0 There are a lot of international parents on these lists, who would be using Ginkgo for treating Down syndrome (by lowering GABA a little, which is 50% overexpressed in people with Ds). Except that so far the only brands the head researchers have bothered to contact the manufacturer and confirm are Honeycombs (only available on one site in the U.s. really) and Ginkgold (only in pill form so not for young children). BUT I'd love to be able to get your brand- I have often used Nature's Answer for other things. Also I and the other international parents could purchase NA easily at Iherb.com (we live in China). THANKS! by the way, FYI one MD we all listen carefully to recommends Ginkgo Biloba for all patients with Down syndrome (who have not exhibited a seizure disorder.) Many parents, like ourselves, have cautiously started our babies and toddlers on it, in measured amounts, and watching carefully for seizure activity; I can recall no ill reports actually, only way positive remarks. The dosage for DS is done in mg per kg of body weight and is dosed once a day; some people are starting a second dose at night because somehow it HELPS promote sleep in people with DS. So it would also be useful to know the exact mg of active ginkgo in each drop of Nature's Answer formulations (I think people will primarily be interested in the non alcohol version). For honeycombs, we have gone back and forth with the manufacturer and finally discovered it is 3.3 mg per drop for instance. (Sent From Contact Us Page) 2) GAIA herbsre: this<http://www.iherb.com/Gaia-Herbs-Ginkgo-Leaf-Alcohol-Free-1-fl-oz-30-ml/8564?at=0>Gaia Herbs makes a whole leaf full spectrum extract of Organic Ginkgo Biloba, it is processed without the use of toxic solvents…… it is processed differently than EGb 761 which is pharmaceutically manufactured by Schwabe in Germany. The only accurate way to measure the concentration of Gaia’s Ginkgo products is to go by the flavone glycosides listed on the label. The amount of Flavone glycosides in Gaia Herbs liquid drop (in the dropper bottle) of alcohol free Ginkgo Biloba is 2mg per 30 drops (at a daily dose of 30 drops 4 times per day this = 8mg flavones glycosides per day) .. It is not possible to standardize this type of product to 24% flavones glycosides because it would no longer flow through the dropper… it would be too concentrated. For comparison a product such as EGb 761 that is standardized to 24% flavones glycosides delivers 30mg flavone glycosides per day. Gaia Herbs Ginkgo Biloba Phyto-Cap (encapsulated alcohol free Ginkgo Biloba) delivers 30mg flavone glycosides per daily dose of 3 capsules… the equivalent concentration as EGb 761. Note that our alcohol based Ginkgo liquid drop (in the dropper bottle) delivers 4 mg flavones glycosides per 30 drops) …..twice as much as the alcohol free glycerin based product. None of Gaia Herbs’ Ginkgo products are standardized to terpine lactones. Dual standards for one herb can only be achieved it the product goes through a pharmaceutical type of processing. Gaia Herbs’ Ginkgo products are not made according to the EGb 761 product made in Germany… this product is a multi step pharmaceutically made product that is ginkolic acid free. In Germany it is required for Ginkgo products to be ginkolic acid free, however, in the USA the regulations do not require any Ginkgo products to be ginkolic acid free…. Please see attached information about this. Sorry this is so complicated, however, the products are made differently…. The only accurate comparison regarding concentration is to compare the flavone glycoside content. Sincerely,Mandy.
