I find it a fascinating topic that young children who have never been exposed to

very violent or sexual scenes can focus their ocd around it.

I am not paranoid -- not an extremist -- but just looked this up and thought it

was interesting.  I have heard it all before but all of this talk made me want

to look it up again.

I'm not saying this happens or does not happen ... just maybe something to

ponder.

Subject: New Here..My 8 Year Old Son Has It Too..

Date: Wednesday, January 20, 2010, 3:01 PM

Hello all,

The same thing happened to my son 1 month ago and we were

shocked at the thoughts that he was having.

He is also 8 years old and he is a very sweet child.

On December 19th, he said " mom, I am having some horrible

thoughts and I can't stop them or get them to go away. "

He began crying and started going into detail about the thoughts.

He said that he was having thoughts of sex with everyone that he

sees-(both males & females)He said that he had thoughts of killing everyone in

the house. He kept crying and said that they were not

how he really feels and that he would never do anything bad but the

thoughts were popping into his head and wouldn't go away.

My husband & I were at a complete loss for words because our son

has never seen any really bad movies involving sex and killing.

However, he does have a PS 2 game system and some of the games

do have some pretty graphic fighting scenes in them. Needless

to say, I have destroyed all the games that he had which had

a rating above " E " -for everyone.

When my son was telling me his thoughts, I began to seriously

think that he was possessed by a demonic spirit. I was really

beginning to worry for everyone's safety as I have 2 other

children in the house. (an 18 month old and a 3 year old)

I thought about taking him to the emergency room but then I

decided to look online first to see if anyone else was also

having this happen to them.

I did a Google search on " bad thoughts in children " and I

basically was able to find within minutes that he had OCD.

I sat my son down and told him not to worry because he was not

alone and I let him read some of the posts that I found on the

internet. He was constantly crying before he read the OCD symptoms because he

thought that he was going crazy and that he was going to ultimately harm his

family. This also made him feel relieved that I believed him and was going to

get him some help.

That following Monday-December 21, I began calling to try to locate

a child psychiatrist & needless to say, I could not find 1 single psychiatrist

who would be able to see him for at least 3 weeks due

to the holidays.

On Monday December 28th, after 9 days I finally was starting to fall apart

because my son was crying and confessing his intrusive thoughts all week & I

knew that my sweet lil boy was going through pure hell & he was now starting to

talk about harming himself to make his awful thoughts stop.

I decided that I couldn't wait for the 3 week appointment because he was now

talking suicide and this was now an emergency situation, so,

I looked up the nearest psych hospital which I discovered was only 15 minutes

away and I drove my son directly there. I went to the front desk and told them

that my son was having thoughts of harming himself and harming others. I knew

that they would have to admit him because

it would be against the law if they didn't admit him in that mental state.

Needless to say, he was interviewed by a psychiatrist within 30 minutes and

admitted into the hospital right then and there. He was given Ativan and Zoloft

along with daily CBT therapy. He was released 7 days later, instructed to take

Zoloft 50mg once a day and to have therapy once a week out-patient.

He was able to return to school the following day after his release from the

hospital. However, he did have several sexual intrusive thoughts when he first

got in the classroom but he is not having them every 5 minutes anymore and he

said that he was able to not worry about them as much as before.

Our therapist told us to get him on the 504 program as soon as

possible because she has seen too many kids slip through the

cracks because they just did not get the right help that they

needed in school-especially keeping them focused. I have already

filled out the paperwork for the 504 education protection and my appointment is

tomorrow morning.

I am the kind of person who will not take no for an answer especially when it

comes at the expense of my kids.

Thanks for listening and I have a feeling that I am

going to be a member here for a long time.

Hugs,

Again, I am not paranoid.  This is the last I will write of this.   I just

truly don't understand how a young child who has never been exposed to a graphic

sexual scene at all can formulate such images in their head.  Yet it happens

alot.   It almost makes more sense that somehow their conscious or subconscious

mind has seen it somehow.

Tammie,

Please don't get me wrong.  I don't think your son has been exposed to anything

at all, and I believe 100% he has not been molested or anything along those

lines  .. I am just wondering if somehow our kids (with their sticky brains)

perhaps pick up on subliminal messages that may or may not be out there perhaps

more than someone else would.  I am just questioning how in the world a young

child who has not been exposed gets images like that in their head.  My son had

them too, at age 10, and he too had not been exposed to anything and violence I

can understand more, but the sexual images -- I don't get that am just wondering

if perhaps somehow there is something in the media that is getting those images

there.

Does anyone else wonder about this?  The images can be so graphic that these

poor little ones have and how does a young child's mind conjure up these

images?

I looked at the link you put up and don't really get it, the images my son

has are not similar to the " messages " in those cartoons.

Like I said earlier we understand that Hospitals, Doctors etc need to rule out

abuse, I would expect them to but from everything I have read so far, and I have

only been in this a few weeks so I am no expert but it seems these are not

images or thoughts that kids get from possibly seeing a penis shaped castle for

a milisecond in a disney cartoon. Just my opinion of course, believe me I am

looking for answers too so appreciate the question.

Hey, I know it sounds unrealistic, and I am truly grasping here too!  Does

anyone have any ideas as to how these sexual images in such graphic nature get

into a poor child's head?  It seems like everyone here on the board whose child

has these awful thoughts is along the same theme ... never been exposed, very

careful on what they watch, etc.  I'm just thinking out loud really.   How

would they get there?  Do you have any ideas, Louis?  I have heard of little 6

yr old boys who have violent thoughts of cutting off breasts and then even

worse.    I believe these kids have not seen these things, so how could the

brain even conjure up these images?  These poor little children ... oh, how I

hate the OCD monster!

I have always wondered this also, because my son, now 8, also suffers from very

" bad thoughts " which began abruptly at age 4. He had never been exposed to

anything bad either. I could not fathom HOW those horrendous thoughts got into

his head.

I wish I had answers too!!!

The images can be so graphic that these

poor little ones have and how does a young child's mind conjure up these

images?

,

I am 100% sure that my son has never seen any VERY

violent movies i.e. slasher type murder movies.

The only violence that he has been exposed to is

from watching the evening news and shows on TV

like America's Most Wanted and video games.

He has NEVER been exposed to any extreme sexual content

that does not already come on regular public TV.

i.e. xxx movies

I do admit that some things on regular public TV are getting

more disturbing every year.

I am also 100% sure that he has never been molested because

I have NEVER let him go to anyone's home or spend the night

anywhere else except here. The only other place that he goes

is to school.

Well, these are my rambling thoughts on this and remember I have a " touch " of

OCD too.

I think back to when I was growing up (I'm 50+) and recall the old rhyme we

would say " cross my heart, hope to die, stick a needle in my eye " for keeping a

promise or something. Well I certainly thought a bit about that " stick a

needle... " part and would get an image of it.

And I'll admit to this too, don't laugh too hard. So far as boys and " body

parts. " Well I'd only ever seen a " wee-wee " (I'll use polite term here) when a

mom was changing a diaper. So, figuring it wouldn't always stay " that size " I

did occasionally spend time wondering just how that thing must look as boys

grew, just like that baby's but bigger, how big, did it change....? :o)

Watching Gunsmoke or other westerns -- well, somehow when some cowboy was

looking at some saloon girl or some female prisoner " that way " and with the

music, I just KNEW he wanted to kiss her and take her clothes off.

And all that was before I knew what sex was and how babies were made. And no

graphic violence for us either growing up. It's just instinctive, it's just

*there*.

I've had the " thought " type OCD (my " touch " of OCD), and things will just pop

into your head. I always just said if it was the worst thing to think or you

knew you shouldn't think it or picture it, then you will; called it my " contrary

brain. " Apologized to God with a " sorry, you know my contrary brain. " And I

shrug it off. My son just can't. But also I think different for me is

that I haven't had the constant thoughts going on, I can well imagine that would

drive me a bit insane or temper would show if the thoughts were there every

hour, all day. I really sympathize with those who go through this.

So, just my thoughts this p.m.

I have heard of little 6

yr old boys who have violent thoughts of cutting off breasts and then

I've often wondered that. I dont' know how a young child can have these

thoughts and images when they haven't ever seen anything, but I know

that it happens. How does their brain conjour that up? I know that

sometimes it's children even younger. I don't get it!
