tics and OCD

Hi everyone, I have not posted in such a long time. I wanted to see if someone

has expericenced this before with their child. My son has Tourette's and OCD,

with adhd.

Around Christmas break every year, my son's tics and OCD get very worse. I know

I have posted this before about not being able to  move from one function to

another.

He gets stuck between. He has been on Zoloft and Clonidine for a couple years.

His Tourette's doctor just raised his Zoloft to 75 mg.

The thing is my son seems to just get stuck while just sitting. He can hear what

we say, but he has to wait to respond. It is like he is on a trance or something

for a few mins.

Has anyone ever had this happen to their child.???

He has had an EEG, and no seizures. But, what is causing these trances and not

being able to talk to us.  IS this OCD or tics, or both.?? Should I have his

tested for something else?

Please any help will be appreciated.

Hi Vickie,

My daughter does this , and it took me many years to figure out why she does it.

She finally told me it is because she is in the middle of " counting something or

saying something in her head " and when I disturb her she has to start all

over. She rushes to count it all out , and than speak to me or do what I ask her

to do.( all the while ignoring me) She has done this since she was about 3, and

she is now 13. She had an EEG and an MRI done as well , as we too questioned

seizures,etc

Hugs

Judy

My son is very much like this. He has sticky thoughts that can be good, bad, or

scary. When he has the giggles (can't stop thinking of something funny and

snickers at the table), I tell my daughter not to look at Matt or talk to him so

that he can get control of himself (we do it in a kind way meaning to be

helpful) and it works. Sometimes we use diversion and sometimes imagery

(imagine yourself putting the thought in a chest and locking it up) and even

writing it on paper and then rolling it up and throwing it away. These

techniques keep him " with it " and able to move on. I think it's the cause for

his inattentiveness in general, but it's hard to teach him to employ the

techniques on his own. There's a ton of info on the web about Tourettes.. one

I like is http://www.tourettesyndrome.net/

Also, just because your son has tics and anxiety and adhd symptoms, don't let

that stop you from considering other things as there's a lot of symptom overlap

and I have heard everything from Asperger's to bipolar to OCD to Tourettes about

my son. Read about the various causes of symptoms to see if anything " clicks " ,

but focus more on the symptoms, strengths and weaknesses rather than a diagnosis

Best wishes

Bonnie

I don't know, but it sounds like he might be doing mental rituals. " I have to

say this x number of times before I answer. " or that sort of thing. When he

does respond, does he answer what you have said or does he seem unaware that he

has missed anything? I think many of us (kids and adults with OCD) get worse at

Christmas as stress levels and expectations go up and routines are disrupted.

There is a transition from school or work to family time and then back again.
