It’s been a good twenty years since I worked in the DFW area doing neurosurgery with some of the finest surgeons in Dallas. I worked there for about 11 yrs, and neurosurgery was my specialty. I do not know if these guys are still there but these are my two recommendations. Dr. Swift is an excellent pedi neurosurgeon. Dr. S.Finn is hands down, one of the best neurosurgeons I have ever worked with, but I am not sure if he does pediatrics. If I ever had to have any neurosurgery done, I would go to him first. My son was having neck pain, x-ray revealed that he has this condition, and he has been referred to a neurosurgeon in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Would appreciate any recommendations. Posted by: " Dinkins-Borkowski " julie@... phoebebork Sun Jul 24, 2011 10:29 pm (PDT) This sounds amazing and it comes out of MIT, so it sounds legit, but I guesswe will see.Description: http://www.technolo gyreview. com/files/ 66624/skintattoo _x220.jpgPhone sensor: This modified iPhone case can be used to detect sodium levelsvia a nanosensor " tattoo. " Credit: and Matt Dubach Tattoo Tracks Sodium and Glucose via an iPhoneNeed to track your blood oxygen levels? There may soon be an app for that.* Wednesday, July 20, 2011* By Kenrick VezinaUsing a nanosensor " tattoo " and a modified iPhone, cyclists could closelymonitor sodium levels to prevent dehydration, and anemic patients couldtrack their blood oxygen levels. <http://www.northeas tern.edu/ pharmsci/ people/faculty/ heather_clark/> , aprofessor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at NortheasternUniversity, is leading a team working to make this possible. The team beginsby injecting a solution containing carefully chosen nanoparticles into theskin. This leaves no visible mark, but the nanoparticles will fluoresce whenexposed to a target molecule, such as sodium or glucose. A modified iPhonethen tracks changes in the level of fluorescence, which indicates the amountof sodium or glucose present. presented this work at the BioMethodsBoston <http://biomethodsbo ston.com/ default.asp> conference at HarvardMedical School last week. The tattoos were originally designed<http://www.technolo gyreview. com/biomedicine/ 22014/> as a way around thefinger-prick bloodletting that is the standard technique for measuringglucose levels in those with diabetes. But says they could be used totrack many things besides glucose and sodium, offering a simpler, lesspainful, and more accurate way for many people to track many importantbiomarkers. " I don't think there's any doubt that this sort of technology will catchon, " says Jim Burns, head of drug and biomedical research and development atGenzyme <http://www.genzyme. com/> .The tattoo developed by 's team contains 120-nanometer- wide polymernanodroplets consisting of a fluorescent dye, specialized sensor moleculesdesigned to bind to specific chemicals, and a charge-neutralizing molecule.Once in the skin, the sensor molecules attract their target because theyhave the opposite charge. Once the target chemical is taken up, the sensoris forced to release ions in order to maintain an overall neutral charge, and this changes the fluorescence of the tattoo when it is hit by light. Themore target molecules there are in the patient's body, the more themolecules will bind to the sensors, and the more the fluorescence changes. The original reader was a large boxlike device. One of 's graduatestudents, Matt Dubach, improved upon that by making a modified iPhone casethat allows any iPhone to read the tattoos. Here's how it works: a case that slips over the iPhone contains a nine-voltbattery, a filter that fits over the iPhone's camera, and an array of threeLEDs that produce light in the visible part of the spectrum. This lightcauses the tattoos to fluoresce. A light-filtering lens is then placed overthe iPhone's camera. This filters out the light released by the LEDs, butnot the light emitted by the tattoo. The device is pressed to the skin toprevent outside light from interfering.Dubach and hope to create an iPhone app that would easily measure andrecord sodium levels. At the moment, the iPhone simply takes images of thefluorescence, which the researchers then export to a computer for analysis. They also hope to get the reader to draw power from the iPhone itself, rather than from a battery. is working to expand her technology from glucose and sodium to includea wide range of potential targets. " Let's say you have medication with avery narrow therapeutic range, " she says. Today, " you have to try it [adosage] and see what happens. " She says her nanosensors, in contrast, couldlet people monitor the level of a given drug in their blood in real time, allowing for much more accurate dosing. The researchers hope to soon be able to measure dissolved gases, such asnitrogen and oxygen, in the blood as a way of checking respiration and lungfunction. The more things they can track, the more applications will emerge, says .
