The DSAC is excited to announce that we will host a Down Syndrome Education Conference (DownsEd) October 20 - 22, 2011 at The Blake Hotel in uptown Charlotte. As you may know, DownsEd is one of the most highly respected organizations of its kind in the world, offering high quality, evidence-based guidance and information for educators, professionals and families. For 30 years, their studies have delivered important insights into speech and language, memory, reading, numbers and mathematics, social skills, education, sleep and behavior for people with Down syndrome. The international DownsEd Conference is based in Great Britain, and fewer than ten United States venues have hosted this event. As you can imagine, we are very excited to be one of the first! If you are not familiar with DownsEd International or would like an update on their activities, please go to their website: www.dseinternational.org. As you will see, the techniques that will be presented are applicable to anyone who is a visual learner. While the research is based on children with Ds, the methods are certainly not specific to only children with Down syndrome. The conference will be presented over a three-day period and will have three age-specific tracks. Please see the attached draft of the agenda to see the 2-day session geared more towards educators and professionals and the 1-day overview session geared more towards families and caregivers. Click here to view the draft agenda. DSAC Members - We need your help to spread the word! Please forward this e-mail or print it with the agenda and give it to your child's educators, therapists, and anyone who has an influential role in their lives. We will have a flyer available in the next few weeks once the registration site is up and running, but in the meantime, we would like to get the word out now - especially with school ending soon. We are offering greatly reduced pricing for this conference for our local DSAC members. Local members will receive a letter in the mail after the registration site is up that will contain a code to use to receive the discount. You may give that code to any educator, therapist, etc. who supports your child so that they may also receive the discount. We are also going to offer the local DSAC Member discount code to students. General Pricing: 2-day "In Depth" Session Oct. 20 - 21 - standard price - $200/person DSAC Member and Student Price with code - $90/person! 1-day "Essentials" Session Oct. 22 - standard price - $75/person DSAC Member and Student Price with code - $25/person! Attend all 3 days - standard price - $250/person DSAC Member and Student Price with code - $100/person! The DSAC needs volunteers for the planning committee and during the conference. Please contact Terri Leyton at tleyton@... or if you would like to volunteer or if you have any questions. Thank you.
