Eek, that was hard to read, and not just because of parts in red!

Here's something a lot of people are getting horribly wrong: the Korean war

NEVER ENDED! What's been the case is that it has been an uneasy truce: no

surrender was ever declared/tendered, and if there had been a clear " winner "

there wouldn't be the DMZ and there wouldn't be North and South Korea, or

whatever their official names are: there'd be just " Korea " instead.

I don't know exactly what is the wisest response to North Korea's posturing: I

can't think that even that insane-seeming leader would launch a nuclear

missile/weapon on anyone, because it isn't ever possible to truly " win " in any

nuclear exchange, even if they themselves didn't get hit directly, and instead,

for example, they had China retaliate for them if we attacked: the amount of

fallout would still mess things up for anything of significance, as well as all

the political fallout. However, there is one major worry I have: North Korea

has had long-term problems with famine, which makes them desperate. Sad

commentary: it would be much easier to feed their population if all their large

standing army were wiped out using nuclear weapons, but then you'd have two

problems to solve, because there'd inevitably be a huge number of civilian

deaths from radiation sickness for those that managed to survive the initial

strikes.

Another thing most people get wrong: their has been no " second " Iraq war

(whatever you want to call things) because of the same basic thing: there was no

surrender, no outright win, just merely a dialing down of hostilities with minor

flare-ups over many years.

We should have taken out Saddam in the first place, as quickly as possible, if

we were going to maintain any hostilities beyond smashing them out of Kuwait.

Unfortunately, the big mistake is assuming that a region where there's

millennias-old tribal conflicts and the like can ever be brought under a

peaceful solution, regardless of how good intentions may/may not be, was

evident: if a sufficient group of the population doesn't really want peace,

you'll either need to eradicate that group somehow, or give up the hopes for

peace: you can't reason with everyone, sadly. Obama was sort of screwed either

way: announce a pull-out date, people act on that, announce there's no pull-out

date, people will also act on that, in a violent way, to strongly encourage one:

I think that was a no-win scenario. I'm of the thought that the best way to do

things would be to leave suddenly, without notice of when, and tell them: if a

corrupted government that's abusive to the citizens pops up, we'll be back to

smear them, so figure things out on your own!

And then there's Iran and Israel: let's face it, the Iranian " president " has it

in for Israel, and Iran has lied repeatedly, and he's vowed to take Israel off

the face of the map: when you put all those things together, it seems far more

reasonable and logical for Israel to go and take out any nuclear facilities, and

this doesn't even change what feelings are about how legitimate Israel is for

existing, etc. Even if Iran were to allow Israeli inspectors into the

publicly-visible facilities, I can't see that being convincing enough at all,

due to the history.

All this is going on, while the world economy burns: major economic hairballs

like this one are when wars are more likely to occur, all else being equal,

because things are in such turmoil, and it provides employment, etc. as sad as

that sounds.

One final thing to remember, is that even in good economic times, most foriegn

aid that is pledged never gets delivered. This is even more true in BAD economic

times, so pledging food or other aid to North Korea to diffuse this crisis would

not result in much real food or economic aid anyway.
