It is really going around Houston. We had the H1N1 vaccine for our dd last

Thursday. I really worried about getting it, but our doctor felt under the

circumstances our daughter getting the H1N1 was running a bigger OCD risk.

We have not done the seasonal.

my son had both best to be safe..i thu couldnt get because i have a latex

allergy

Hi,   My family has not been vaccinated for either vaccine.  I believe they

do not

         help the OCD person.

Almost no one can get H1N1 vaccine around here (MD near DC). I think my

daughter with OCD may have had the virus last week but can't be sure.

Hi, Judy. Josh was vaccinated for both.

I think getting the H1N1 vaccine calmed his anxiety down a bit. I suspect he

was overreacting to the threat and it was adding to his recent flare up.

And when I saw our state would get a shipment, I would call our doctor's office,

immediately, to see if they had gotten any in.

Josh and I (at risk, due to my heart stuff) were both able to get the vaccine.

The news on tv doesn't help the anxiety they have about Swine flu. Matt was a

bit concerned too. His therapist tells me to remind the kids that what they see

on the news is the exception and that's why it's usually on the news.

I was working in the hospital last Sunday and had the occasion to speak with an

infectious disease doctor and she said that kids should definitely get

vaccinated. I had planned on getting Matt's because though he doesn't have

asthma, I worried about the behavioral side effects of Tamiflu if he should need

it.

Well and (both age 20/twins) don't want it. feels he's

healthy enough to be okay if he gets it. And is set on not getting the shot (I

mentioned it more than once to him as his college was giving the shots/spray).

And (OCDer) said once he'd rather get the flu than vaccinate, though I

think he also believes he'll be fine if he gets it; also something for him

personally as to getting future immunity the " natural " way by having it. I

dunno, I think (and I'm guessing) it goes to building up antibodies that way,

sort of like at my age I had to go thru getting the different measles, chicken

pox and other things kids are nowadays vaccinated for. And I can argue how he

has had some vaccinations and how I did too, etc., but it won't sway him. Oh,

and I can explain the shot vs nasal spray to him too, as he didn't want the live

virus, mentioned that as a reason not to get the shot, but he still doesn't want

the shot. I'm not sure if I'm arguing with , or with the Aspergers part

or the OCD part in these discussions.

My son did get both, but neither of my daughters could get any of the shots .

if your in canada they just announced that all childern will receive it due

Judy, both your daughters are under 24. We were told here that anyone under the

age of 24 should be vaccinated.

CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that

certain groups of the population receive the 2009 H1N1 vaccine first. These

younger than 6 months of age, healthcare and emergency medical services

personnel, persons between the ages of 6 months and 24 years old, and people

ages of 25 through 64 years of age who are at higher risk for 2009 H1N1 because

of chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems.

Call your local health departments for vaccine info. Tamiflu (given as an

antiviral when exposed to flu or H1N1) can cause behavioral changes. This was

one of the motivating factors in my having my son vaccinated. Our pdoc said he

was worried about pediatricians prescribing tamiflu.

I am so torn on whether to give any flu shot to my son. Two years ago when he

was 8, he got his first flu shot. He had a headache for a week after the shot,

and he started with facial tics at the same time. This was before we knew he

had OCD. A month later, he had his first full-blown OCD episode, with very bad

thoughts and images. The doctor at the time told me that the shot had nothing

to do with these symptoms, but I can't help but wonder. Looking back to when he

was younger, he had been having minor OCD issues that popped up from time to

time, but nothing like what started after that shot. Right now, he is doing so

well - I hesitate to say " fine " - and I don't want to do anything to change

that!

I've been advised to never get a flu shot, because I had chronic fatigue

syndrome years ago, and the shot supposedly can reactive that. So we are

unprotected and holding our breaths in our house!

That is really interesting, Bonnie. What kind of behavioral changes? I'm

curious because last year, despite Josh getting the flu shot, he also got the

flu. His temp was clear up to 104, on Tylenol. Freaked me out a bit. Anyway,

his doctor gave him Tamiflu. I didn't notice any behavioral changes and am

wondering if we were just lucky. I wish she had told me that was a concern. We

might have decided not to have him take it.

As with all drugs, not every kid will have side effects. The neuro and

psychiatric effects can include hallucinations, aggression, anxiety, delusions,

abnormal behavior. My nephew (just 7) had to take Tamiflu last week and was

fine. If my son had asthma (like his cousin) and seemed to be really sick, I'd

go ahead and give the Tamiflu too. However, this was just one of the reasons

why I opted for the vaccine. Like most things, it's a decision that has to take

all into consideration and no one answer is right for everyone.

How is Josh doing overall?

to be honest i think of it this way...we know its killing very healthy

childern right? so maybe if your child has a flare up of their ocd at least

they will be ok do you know what i mean? i dont mean to sound harsh but my

english is not so good and dont know how else to explain it

Wow, sure glad none of that happened with Josh when he took it last year.

He seems to be doing a little better, Bonnie. Thanks for asking. It's day to

day, you know. It could be worse, (and has been in the past), so we are

grateful it's not that bad this time. It's tolerable most of the time. This

time he is able to continue homeschooling, even driving himself to his one class

outside the home.

We are trying to move ahead with plans for college, and hope for the best, while

doing what needs to be done to try to keep the OCD and anxiety under control,

with hopes things will improve even more in the future. As we all know, this

thing called OCD can be a roller coaster ride.
