Guest guest
HI, I am new , my name is Christy and I have 5 kids, 4 boys and 1 girl. I just learned that my 8 yr old has OCD. He had a stroke and sizures at birth and he is one seizure meds , trileptal, resperal, and was on straterra but i got tired of him falling asleep all the time. So I took him off and got a new nerologist this month. We were with the same one for 8 yrs and she didnt help a lick,, anyhow he is now on trileptal, resperal and zoloft . Can anyone tell me what they think of these meds. He has fits that can last forever it seems,, when he gets stuck on something it can be weeks or months before he gets off of it or we have to buy it. He is OCD on money... sound like most right,,, well we just bought our first house and when we were looking at it he asked the seller..... HOW MUCH MONEY DO U HAVE ? HOW MUCH IS THIS HOUSE...? I was sooo embarrsed. He asks anyone and every one about money. My mother in law and sisters inlaw came to visit and by the time they left he had 26.00 from them. Needless to say i was not happy cuz the other 4 kids didnt get that much and my MIL says he is her favorite... Anyway we wont get on that subject; He also has ADHD. And is sooo defient. ( sorry bad speller) I hate to say it but sometimes I dont like him, it can be very hard to love him , He has hurt animals , and his younger sister. He can be violent and unpredidctable. He neverrrrrr listens, and when i ask him to do something it is like asking a freaking brickwall. Anyway, sorry to unload its been a long week, My 4 month old got H1N1, AND so have I and hubby. Baby Mikeal wont sleep unless I am holding him,... I layed him in his bassinet 5 minutes ago and typing quietly. Doctor also said he might have a high form of Autism. Which I dont know much about,,, i did have a friend that her daughter had it but we dont talk much. And she has it all the way Poor thing. Anyhow, I better go this is long enough..lol if anyone has any advise let me know, thanks,c hristy
Guest guest
Hi Christy and welcome! When you were describing your son's obsession with money I thought that this sounded more like an Asperger's issue than an OCD issue. So I think the doctor may be on to something when he said that he may have a " high form of autism " . OCD and Asperger's often go hand in hand though (as well as ADHD and sometimes ODD, which it sounds like your son also might have) so it all kind of goes together, but a good psychologist or neurologist can sort it all out for you. What else does your son do that is OCD? If it's just his obsession with money then I would question a diagnosis of OCD. People with Asperger's have obsessions, but they generally enjoy these obsessions (like your son's obsession with $). People with OCD have obsessions/compulsions that they hate doing and wish that they didn't do. My kids have both Asperger's and OCD. My 8yr old daughter is obsessed with numbers and counting. This is her Asperger's obsession. She loves numbers. It crosses the line into OCD whenever the numbers start to control her life. For example, she has to count every single step she takes to make sure she always ends on an even number. Or she has to chew her food an even number of times. Or things have to be symmetrical so she's constantly making things look and feel symmetrical. Everything she does has to be even so if she went to a gymnastics class and the coach told them to do three somersaults, she would have a VERY hard time doing three. She would most likely have to do an extra one to make it even and then she would hope the coach didn't notice or she would act like she heard her wrong or something like that. Does all this make sense? Misty ________________________________ To: Sent: Wed, October 28, 2009 11:03:26 PM Subject: Newbi HI, I am new , my name is Christy and I have 5 kids, 4 boys and 1 girl. Guest guest
Thanks for your info. I tell ya I am not sure what all of the terms mean , ocd,Asperger, and allthat. I know about adhd and add. I have add and i have another son that is 12 with adhd but he seemed to controll it rather well. Dalton my son he does count his money almost every day. He constantly asks me how much stuff is and especially when it is on tv. If we go to dinner he asks how much it was, I mean it is everything. I dont know what asperger is can u tell me more? He does kinda enjoy it I guess, when he buys something that he has been wanting he is happy till he sees the next thing... i feel like it sounds like a normal kid but it is to the extreme to us. He ask the mail man how much money she had and also the UPS guy too. lol He has No limits to asking people. Its crazy to us.lol/ ________________________________ To: Sent: Thu, October 29, 2009 12:31:57 AM Subject: Re: Newbi Hi Christy and welcome! Guest guest
Welcome, Christy. Okay, I know I shouldn't laugh at this. . . ***My mother in law and sisters inlaw came to visit and by the time they left he had 26.00 from them. *** But, I did. Sometimes you have to laugh about some of this stuff, or you go crazy. lol I'm so sorry you are sick with the H1N1 flu, on top of everything else. You sound like you have a lot to deal with. There are some great books that describe OCD really well, that might help you to try to figure out what he might be exhibiting that is considered OCD. If I had to suggest one, I would recommend Dr. Aureen Pinto Wagner's book, What to do When your Child has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Misty explained OCD vs Aspergers well. Our son was the same with his OCD, evening everything up.. . Everything had to symmetrical. But, OCD can manifest itself in different ways too, so don't mean to make it sound like that is the only thing that indicates OCD. For some, it can be " intrusive thoughts " only, with no outward rituals. The rituals vary in nature, and can morph from one thing to another. But, Misty is right, the one thing that indicates it is OCD, is that they can have anxiety if they don't do the rituals, whether they are physical or mental. It is bothersome to them. Sometimes there is no anxiety attached, but they need to do the ritual so things can feel " just right " . Whereas with Aspergers, from what I've read, and from what others have shared in here, they typically enjoy the thing they are obsessed with. There is a specific type of therapy called CBT/ERP (cognitive behavioral therapy / exposure and response prevention) that is very effective with OCD. Our son used it to overcome pretty much all of his rituals. With the number of kid you have, including a new baby, I know it is probably really hard to find time to yourself, but it is crucial that you do. Having a child with OCD, can wear you completely out. Try to find time for yourself, even if it's an extra 10 minutes in the bathroom, to just breath. It's so important to take care of " you " too. Glad you found us. Guest guest
Each med your son is on addresses some of his needs. The Trileptal is for seizures, but can also be used for mood disorders. The Risperdal is used for agitation, and the Zoloft for anxiety. It's hard to know when you have multiple drugs on board. The are side effects that may erupt initial or during treatment. It's a good idea to jot down somewhere when you started the drug or increased the dose and note the changes, go with your gut feelings about them too. Sounds like your son has some social skill deficits (asking questions that are sensitive or inappropriate )which is found in those on the autistic spectrum, but also in kids with ADHD or other behavioral issues that prevent them from having the experiences to develop those skills. The brick wall part - definitely an attentional issue (ADHD and autistic) - I have this with my son too. I hope that you have a good therapist and some help at home. A lot of your son's behaviors can be addressed with therapeutic interventions. Do you have a system of rewards for his behavior? It must be so hard to handle everything with 5 kids. I can barely do it sometimes with 2! Wish you all the best Bonnie > > HI, > I am new , my name is Christy and I have 5 kids, 4 boys and 1 girl. I just learned that my 8 yr old has OCD. Guest guest
Hi Christy, whew! you do have your hands full! I want to echo what Misty said. I was also thinking the obsession with money and the blunt sort of inappropriate questions (relating to money) he asks others also made me wonder about Aspergers/autism spectrum. The obsession with $$ seemed more related to the type obsessions many on the autism spectrum have. Also the " not listening " could go with this. Regarding hurting others and animals, is he just too rough with them or is he angry at the time, or is it more " intentional " when he hurts? Intentional would point to something else, like a behavior disorder. And the " not listening " could go with this too. Not always easy to know what's going on diagnosis-wise with our kids, is it just " This " or is something else going on too....(sigh) Ugh, sorry you all have had the swine flu, I hope everyone recovers soon! Guest guest
Thanks guys you have gave me alot to think about. Just when u think u know it alll you are hit with another SUPRISE " . Yesterday was such a good day. He didnt have any fits,,, we ask him to pick something up or help with something and he did it with out a fight. Buth this afternoon, we went to a halloween costume contest and he lost and began to have a huge fit right their infront of everyone. Thanks God we were leaving. and he cried for atleast 20 minutes after that. Then about an hour later he has a loose tooth and that is one of his obssions right now and he bit his corndog and it began to bleed and u would of thought he was shot. That was a fit for atleast an hour. Anyhow, I think he jsut dont get things, for a long time he thought his blanket (which he takes everywhere and has to have to sleep or another fit for a LONGGG time) could eat and drink. Its like somethings he just doesnt comprehend. I dont know. In the past he has almost killed a kitten buriening it and not realizing it can die. I have to give it mouth to mouth and get a straw and well it made it. But he was pretty young then. He didnt begin talking till he was atlest 4 and sintences at 5. Sorry for the bad spelling I am half asleep. I am so tired , and I found out today that my just turned 5 month old has a touch of newmonia ( i know horrible speller). And he has a rageing ear infection. We are giving him meds for h1n1, breathing treatments, antibotics, and acid reflux. Boy he is a trooper. Well I better go , I hope to get atleast an hour sleep before the baby wakes. Thanks again, and sorry for the long letter. christy ________________________________ To: Sent: Thu, October 29, 2009 8:47:19 PM Subject: Re: Newbi Hi Christy, whew! you do have your hands full!
