Yes we have heard of it and it was recommended to also boost my daughter's

meds effectiveness.

Haven't tried it yet but was told it was safe (dietary supplement) Am

curious if others have tried it, too.

Hi Grace, hadn't heard of it and so googled it. Interesting. I did read

notes posted at a site by people taking it and pretty much all loved it, said it

was great, miracle...! A couple or so didn't feel any benefit. Hope it's

" great " for your son. Do keep us posted. Some saw improvement within a couple

weeks.

Last year the doctor my daughter was working with wanted to augment her SSRI

with an antipsychotic booster. She was opposed due to previous bad experiences.

Alternatively the doctor offered her the concentrated folate. She tried it for

awhile, but got no benefit from it, so stopped.

I'm a big advocate of supplements, and the risk is low, so despite my daughter's

lack of success with it, I'd recommend trying it.

With Josh's recent flare up of anxiety, his doc has suggested trying Buspar with

his Celexa, if things do not settle down. I would prefer he was less medicated,

rather than more, so hoping things settle down. But this sounds like a great

thing to try first, Grace. I hope it helps. Please let us know.

Sorry to hear your son is still struggling with social and sensory anxiety,

despite the Lexapro. But glad to hear it is helping a little. I know you've

had such a hard time of it. I don't recall you mentioning he was on Lexapro

before. Is this a new medication for him?

Hi BJ,

(and thanks to everyone who responded)

My prior post sounded weird b/c I realized I wrote " she " without any

antecedent(as in " psychiatrist " )-so just clearing that up.

My son started lexapro about 3 mo ago. His contamaination issues do seem

lessened and his mood (tending to depression) is pretty good-so maybe it is

helping. We also have a new therapist who specializes in selective mustism and

she is so good for understanding my son (finally!). They don't talk at all yet,

not even eye contact (she said she's had to undo all her therapy training to

work with SM kids) and there is no pressure to do so, but she works through me

for him, and also as a strong advocate for my son, which has been a big help in

obtaining understanding for him from school personnel etc. He has been out of

school for 5th and 6th grade and we returned him to a private placement after a

trial in a district self-contained class did not work out. He goes to a learning

center which has worked closely with me and with his therapist to tailor for

him. Right now I am on-site for all his tutoring sessions to " fade " him into

staff there (gradually working him towards speaking a little while we also work

on acdemic subjects) and particularly one tutor who will be his " key person "

(someone with whom he speaks) and hopefully can take over from me in fading him

into new staff. This will be a very slow process though (just getting him to

enter the building on a regular basis-just 3x per week-was our 1st goal). We are

trying not to trigger anxiety and inability to attend.

With our psychiatrist's support and the new therapist we finally got the

district to agree to fund this placement for my son after 2 yrs of trying (or

rejecting) district placements. They were all either too " behavioral " or too

large and overwhelming. So maybe just the reduction of pressure and working

towards a solution for his long absence from schooling has helped my son

somewhat as well as any med.

His social anxiety (and maybe BDD thrown in there?) is still very difficult and

his sensory avoidance stuff too-so maybe the deplin could boost the srri effect-

We'll see. When my older daughter tried risperdal (also with lexapro) she

developed stiff knees and gait and a neck twitch, even in a very tiny dose, so I

am not much in favor of that class of meds thinking my OCD anxiety spectrum kids

are just very very sensitive.

That is great news about the Lexapro, Grace. But, I'm even more happy for

you to have finally found someone who understands and can help with the

selective mustism. I know that has been a problem for so long. I'm so happy

you've found someone who can help.

Are you seeing any changes in him yet? I see you mentioned they don't talk or

even make eye contact, but do you notice any changes in attitude, that might

indicate he is open for it? Has he been able to make it to the learning center

3 times a week?

I'm really happy for you that you have a direction to work towards now, after

struggling for so long. Please keep us updated on your progress.
