Guest guest
Hi everyone, My father was hospitalized for a couple days last week. He went into a short Diabetic comma and had blood sugar levels over 600. The doctors said that it was higher, but they don't even know how high, because that is were the reading machine maxes out at. They said with a level like that, he should be dead. He still went to work when his sugars were 475 and then passed out at work and my little (16 yr old) brother happened to be at his office that day and called the ambulance. He was in a diabetic comma for about a half an hour and after giving him a ton of insulin, he came out of it. That was very scarey for my mom and very sad and scarey when they called me, because I also have problems with my blood sugars and have to take medicine for it and I know how bad it feels just to have a blood sugar level of 260 and that is bad enough. I can't immagine how bad he must have felt with that kind of level. Anyhow, although I am Insulin resistant and my dad is diabetic, I don't know enough about it to know the kind of damage thatt could have been or maybe has been done from him going up that high. Can anyone tell me better more about that and the risk of it coming back or why it even happened or anything? I would appreciate any info or comments. Thanks in advance. Also that same night I got the call from my mom about my dad, my mother in law called and said that my father-in-Law was in the hospital too. He was having trouble breathing and they thought it was a heart attack, but now they are thinking it is a pinched nerve, because it is still hurting unless he takes Perkaset and then that takes away the pain but also knocks him out. So we went out to visit him for the last couple days and he is not really doing any better and slept for two days straight and my mother in law says that he is still sleeping. On top of that, my husband is still not doing well with his Crohn's disease. He is sleeping too. He slept the whole weekend while we were out at his parents house and then he has slept all day today and had to call in sick at work for today and tomarrow. He is on the maximum amount that the doctors said they can give him of everything. He had his Remecaid infusion 4 weeks ago, he is on 12 Asacol pills/day, 2 " 6mp " or mercapialpurine and 40 mgs prednisone every day. He is lowering his stress as much as possible, with no money and the fear that he is going to loose his job with all the work he has had to mis, but know his head and neck are killing him and he has been shakey and throwing up and sometimes I wonder whether they gave him the right diagnosis or not with his sickness, none of his medication has ever in 8 years of having Crohn's helped him to get into remission. I don't know what else to do for him. I have tried Energy healing, as good as I can figure out from the books, and my aunt just sent some condensed version of Aloe Vera juice for him to try now and I just don't know what to do. If anyone has any recomendations or knows anything else he could do, or any other disease he could hagve instead of Crohn's or anything, please help us and post about it. Thanks! And your prayers for all of the men in my life are very much needed right now. I know that my dad and I have had our differences and he is not the best man in the world but I love him and he is way better than many out there. And my FIL and my husband are the two best men I have ever met. Please pray for all of them and anywords of encouragement or thoughts about the illnesses or medical info or whatever, please help me. I feel very alone sometimes and losing any of these people, especially my husband would be the last straw for me right now. Please pray for us. Thankyou Esther __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Hi Esther, Does he have Type I or Type II diabetes? Did he have an acute illness just before his episode? Do you happen to know if he had ketoacidosis or was it a non-ketotic coma? Does he have an impaired ability to recognize extreme thirst? Hyperglycemia of such magnitude is often the result of extreme dehydration. > Hi everyone, > My father was hospitalized for a couple days last > week. Guest guest
Esther, If he does indeed have a pinched nerve then this must be treated. The choices are open back surgery and a less invasive option, arthroscopic laser surgery. Percocet is nothing to fool around with. That is an extremely potent and highly addictive pain medication. Treatment will eliminate the need to take it. > He was having > trouble breathing and they thought it was a heart > attack, but now they are thinking it is a pinched > nerve, because it is still hurting unless he takes > Perkaset and then that takes away the pain but also > knocks him out. Guest guest
I have you all in our prayers! Sorry you are going throught this stress. I am type 2 diabetic and I have had a couple high levels over 400. Morphine after surgery caused mine. So many things can bring this on such as illness, stress and not taking enough meds. Does he see in endocrinologist? They can help with keeping sugar levels under control. I know a person who had most of his intestines removed after suffering from Chrohns disease. He is doing really well now. I'm not sure what kind of specialists deal with this kind of issue, but there has to be some help somewhere. I will do some research and see if I can't find some answers. I'm sure there are support discussion boards somewhere. Does he belong to anything like that? I wish I lived closer because I would come over and give you a much needed break! Please let us know how you and your family are doing! Guest guest
There is a group diabetes but they are overwhelmingly mainstream, so beware if you discuss anything considered alternative. As to longterm effects, I have read men saying when their glucose is much over 200 they can't have errections, that might be one thing to encourage him to take better care of himself. Anytime the body has higher-than-normal levels, the affects can be hardened arteries, neuropathy, etc. I don't know about the outcome from one event, but it certainly can contribute to organ failure, blindness, etc. I know it's hard, I have type 2, and it's got to be his decision to take care of himself. Hopefully you all can help encourage him. Have they checked your FIL's cardiac enzymes? I would want to make sure they've definitely ruled out a heart attack from a medical standpoint, painkillers can help with heart attack pain, so that in and of itself isn't an indicator that there is no heart attack. As to the Crohns, does he take probiotics, enzymes, and eat careful diets? I just started Allie on low does naltrexone, if you look at Dr. McCandless' website www.starvingbrains.com for her research stuff, she has it referenced that LDN has been found to help those with crohns. I also want to add that I've been following a very strict diet the last few weeks and I no longer have gastro upsets like diarrhea, bloating, etc, that accompany Crohns. I have a tendancy to wonder if it's our bad diets (that I struggle with personally) that causes the GI problems of crohns, and that perhaps a strict diet high in friuts & veggies (raw amap) is the real issue, but I could be wrong, just been successful in my case.
