Guest guest
I was a little hesitant about going, but have to say, that it was a truely wonderful experience for both me & my daughter. Meg is so thrilled to have met other girls like her - and tonight she spent a long time telling me both fun things they did, and worries that other girls had. Then she was motivated to tell me some things that I did not know yet, that we could add to the heirarchy (but not to work on this week, mom!) I can tell how happy she is, and how much this trip normalized having OCD. It was well run (there are always things to improve, but really so good in many ways). She is already plotting how to get there next year (mom, we can take the train to DC, it will be much cheaper!) Thanks to all the girls, and to their parents for sharing so generously. For me, it was incredible to meet other parents, to feel so normal talking about " scary underwear " and about wondering if you are going nutty by constantly researching PANDAS. And I went to classes for creative pediatric CBT, and how to build a motivational therapy story - and research summaries, and an amazing talk by Dr. Jenike, whose stories are both frightening, and full of hope. I was stunned by some of the stories, and cried with more than one parent, especially of adult children. I want the reasearch on this disease to go so much further, but I left with such respect for how far it has come in the last 30 years. I would not have wanted to be an OCD parent a generation or two ago (don't get me wrong, it's a bummer now too - but there are options, so many more options). I thank God for this support group where I learn so much, the OC Foundation, Amazon , and the internet. I left renewed and re-energized. I left proud of how far Meg has come, and confident in the road ahead because of the courage she is learning to have now. I would recommend the experience to anyone that can make it there. It was appropriate for kids down to around 6, and many parents were there without their children. in NC.
