Hi ,

Yes, it is Dr.Kovacevic.

I'm just curious if he means he would treat him over the phone????

He said he does phone consults on Mondays, (which I will call first thing Mon

am)

I can't fly to chicago right now.

Isn't treatment for PANDAS ongoing treatments, where I would have to go out

there several times?

thanks and hugs!

Judy

Judy,

Since you say the doctor is a he, I assume you're in contact with Dr Kovacevic

in Chicago (www.webpediatrics. com). I don't know how much he charges for a

phone consult. But I'm sure a quick call to the office would be able to answer

and also tell you whether they'll accept insurance. It's the best gift you'll

ever give your son.

I know many parents who are very happy with him and he's been able to help their

children recover, in many cases completely recover.

No matter what the cost, it's got to be better than trips to doctors who can't

help. I'm glad you were able to get some confirmation regarding your son. Sounds

like you're on the right path...stick with it and keep us posted.

saying that my son has every single symtpom and that it is HIGHLY likely he has

PANDAS. He said, it could be from the Lyme as well and I should pursue that

also, but that he probably has both. They told me to call for  a phone conference

because I live so far away.

Dr K may do consults on Monday, but I'm pretty sure you can schedule a consult

by calling on any day of the week. It's just that your appt will be on a Monday.

Most likely, Dr K will spend a fair amount of time reviewing your son's medical

history. If appropriate, he may prescribe a short term dose (5-10 days) of

prednisone. He may also discuss antibiotics for a period of time. If your son

still has his tonsils, you may also discuss the benefits of a Tonsillectomy/

adenoidectomy. All these things can be done over the phone.

Depending on your results from these steps, Dr K may suggest IVIG. To do this,

he will order a blood test to make sure your son doesn't have a certain kind of

immuno-deficiency (IGg). If this looks ok, at that time you can decide if IVIG

is an option for you. In some cases, only one IVIG treatment is needed. In other

cases, a second treatment becomes warranted (but you'd give the first treatment

6 months to work before making that decision). It depends on the severity of the

case, the age of the child and how long your child has been fighting this thing.

Many parents end up flying to Chicago for IVIG. But some have been able to find

local doctors who will consult with Dr K and do it in a local hospital. IVIG

sounds scary, but it's used on a regular basis for Multiple Sclerosis and many

other autoimmune diseases.

There is also a one-time treatment of plasmapheresis, but Dr K does not use this

treatment option.

I'm sure he will work with you as much as practical to limit your travel. But if

you see positive results, who knows, you may be jumping on the first flight you

can find...

Best of luck!
