Guest guest
I recently read the book Saving Sammy: The boy who caught OCD. I thought it was excellent and it will hopefully save many children. It was surprising to me that the boy was treated with Augmentin XR based on the rise and fall of the strep antibodies rather than testing for an active strep infection. The antibiotics were used for their possible anti-inflammatory effects rather than anti-bacterial. The author, Beth Alison Maloney has a website at www.savingsammy.net Watch the videos there from TODAY show and other interviews. Guest guest
I had the pleasure of meeting Beth, the author last night at a book reading for " Saving Sammy " last night here in Maine. Sammy had no symptoms of a strep infection ever, but it was in his body. Also, strep antibodies need to only be over 100 to be a possible strep infection, or the presence of antibodies long after an infection, for a positive PANDAS diagnosis. A simple dose of anti biotics was not enough. Sammy was on the powerful anti-biotic Augmentin for one year at 2000 mg strength and 3 more years at 1000 mg. The anti biotic is a more powerful form of penicillin with an additive. This book is amazing. You'll laugh and cry right with Beth. She'll give you the tools to show your doctor why this is a very important treatment to consider. Doctors often hesitate to give one course of anti-biotics. When they would treat rheumatic fever, the course of anti-biotics was years as well, to fully remove the anti bodies from attacking the heart. Those are strep anti bodies too. The diagnosis which was the cause of Sammy's OCD and Tourette's was a disease called PANDAS. You can read what other mothers say helped their children at www.latitudes.org, clicking on forums, then Choosing PANDAS. Sammy's original pediatrician tried to cure him with Zoloft, increasing the dose over and over again. This almost killed him. He didn't need to be happier, he needed to strep to stop attacking his basel ganglia in his brain. Amazon.com has great prices on this book. We have our doctors appointment all ready. At Beth's Facebook page, she's listing PANDAS receptive doctors in each state. Sixteen so far. You can go there from www.savingsammy.net Look at all the interviews, you'll be amazed. We as mom's need to remind doctors often that WE know our children best, and if they are not doing better, we need to find a doctor that will help them. > > I recently read the book Saving Sammy: The boy who caught OCD.
