As I was reviewing my fellow bloggers posts I came upon this article “Profoundly Disabled, We Wouldn’t Have Her Any Other Way” and it just sort of spoke to me. I love how she talks about a little known secret about people with disabilities and profound disabilities. I agree with what she says about the media, that unless a child is doing things beyond what is expected of them they are usually not talked about and I often feel that way about our listserves too. I want to encourage all parents to talk about their children, share them with us. Sam has taught me so much…not through his words which are few but instead through his actions and how he approaches life and situations. Just his being! “It is this celebration of difference, of life being better because of the existence of children with disabilities, of my little girl being perfect because of her disabilities – not in spite of them – that we so rarely hear about.” And my favorite quote: “…the idea that our worth is not in doing – in achieving, acquiring and winning, but rather in being.” See the full article at: http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/features/profoundly-disabled-we-wouldnt-have-her-any-other-way-2072088.html I just ordered her book, Just Because available through Amazon.com. Sue MayerMom to Sam (10) with Down syndrome, Brain Injury, Apraxia, Dysphagia, Respiratory/Immune Issues, Bi-Lateral Conductive Hearing Loss and now Perthes or as I like to say “Yada, Yada,Yada”www.suemayer-specialneedsmom.blogspot.com
