Guest guest
http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2009/04/swine-flu-skept.html ABC News' Karl reports: In Texas, state officials have shut down all high school sporting events. In Washington, Vice President Biden says he's advised family members not to fly in airplanes. But at least one member of Congress has a different message on the swine flu: Don't worry about it. Congressman Ron , R-Tex., is a committed libertarian who is skeptical of government action of any kind. He is also one of the few medical doctors in Congress and he may have a point. Maybe, just maybe, swine flu fears have been blown out of proportion. As ABC's Z. Byron Wolf reported earlier this week, Dr. was a freshman Congressman in 1976, during the last swine flu panic. He says he was one of just two members of the House who voted against the emergency swine flu vaccination program ordered by President Ford. An extreme position? Not really. Only one person died from the swine flu then, but at least 25 people died because of the vaccine. We caught up with Dr. in his Congressional office and talked about this latest swine flu scare. Listen carefully: He might be as correct on this one as he was in 1976. +++ This morning I read an article that said in 2006, the latest year for records, 56,000 people in the US alone died from the regular flu. Guest guest
" This morning I read an article that said in 2006, the latest year for records, 56,000 people in the US alone died from the regular flu. " I have been hearing that this flu is not as bad as the worst one. However, there are two things that most of these folks ignore: 1) It has a higher communicability than normal because no one has an immunity to it. So far, 1 out 4 people exposed to it get it. That is a much higher rate than the strains of flu we are used to. So even if this flu killed at the usual rate as others, more would die because more would get it in the first place. 2) Other countries have scientists which have a contradictory point of view. They say that typically, when a new flu virus circulates, the first wave is comparatively slight but the second wave is deadly. A virus does not want to kill a host organism, but live symbiotically with it, as does -say- the herpes virus. If a strain of flu stands to be killed off by any host organism it infects, then it mutates into a stronger virus that is more likely to thrive. This mutation is the deadly one because some people simply cannot handle the strength of the strain. It is thought that this secondary strain will arrive in the fall. So look for two " waves. " One as deadly as normal, and another which is even more deadly. This in addition to the strains of flu which have come and gone this year and already done their deadly work.
