I have a 14 year old son who has OCD. He is tormented by using the bathroom. His

showers can be a 2 hour process from start to finish only to feel dirty when he

is all done. He is the boy who can't stop washing his hands. It was just this

past July that I realized that he had OCD. We have been going to therapy - have

a wonderful Dr. I would like to supplement our therapy sessons with a support

group. It seems a lot of the support groups in our area has disolved over the

years. Please advise if you know of a group we live in Macomb, MI.

Please help if you can.

A very concerned mother of a struggling 14 year old boy who just wants to be

normal! Thank you in advance to anyone who has advice.

Kerrie, I don't have a group to recommend but wanted to send you (((hugs))).

Did the longer showers start since therapy began? Sometimes OCD worsens then.

(20) used to take long showers. I don't know what he was doing in there

but I know that OCD slowed him down. He finally got to a place where he just

worked on getting done sooner, even if it was just trying for 5 minutes, sort of

pushing himself to get " unstuck " I guess with whatever was slowing him from task

to task.

Presently he takes long showers but now with his bad thoughts (earlier OCD gone)

it's to " vent " while in there.

Hope you find a local support group!

Thank you for the comfort.  Yes, his longer showers did start after he began

therapy.  The stress of starting back at school has made his OCD worse in other

ways too.  You say your son is 20, can I ask at what age you realized he had

OCD?  Did you have access to a support group.  All the groups in my area have

seemed to dissolve for one reason or another.  Just wondering if you ever went

to one and if they help?

This is all very new to me still.  Sometimes it's just nice to know there's

families just like us out there.  Thank you for the hugs!

I wish you and your son well :)

Kerrie

Hi again Kerrie, 's OCD began not long after he started 6th grade.

Before that, I had noticed little " OCD quirks " like he'd trace over letters a

lot when doing homework, but I'd just prompt him to " move on " and he would. But

suddenly in 6th grade he just seemed to begin " OCDing " all day, all these new

compulsions, rituals, " needs " popping up!

We live in a rural type county, though larger city about 30-45 min away. No

local support for us here. And I worked at our local mental health center at

the time too (!) and no one there experienced with treating OCD. So we muddled

through just by my reading & learning and with the great support and suggestions

from this group, which I found a couple months or so later.

There are parents here who do have access to local support groups and they do

benefit from them.

If your son's OCD is interfering with school and thus his grades, getting work

done, etc., then have you looked into setting up an IEP or a 504 Plan at school?

had a 504 Plan and that really helped, as OCD affected a lot with

school. The following years after OCD began, he always started off well at

school but seemed to have OCD getting worse by the time the holidays got near.

Made me think he was just getting worn out or something, seemed to start a

pattern; start off well but weeks later have OCD spike. Maybe it was all that

" holding back " at school, he never held back at home which is true for so many

of our kids.

Well hopefully your son's showers will shorten soon as he gets more adjusted to

therapy, his anxiety settles down some.

Try the michigan self help clearinghouse. It is only online(used to have a

phone bank as well), but if there is a group you may find it there. I ran a

query and didn't come up with your county (or mine I live in west michigan) but

there were several in the detroit area that may be close.
