Guest guest
Thanks Judy! Well, one thing I am seeing is that she is really tired in the mornings. In fact, she has been tardy several times since she began the taper. Tardiness has been a big issue with her for YEARS, though. Mostly because of dressing issues when her sensory stuff was bad, then anxiety, then panic. It always seemed to be something,. Then when she went ON the Zoloft she was really tired. Now I am wondering if the weaning down makes her tired as well. She has disciplinary action for the tardies (I just found out today). Could the discontinuation cause the fatigue? I was on Zoloft for a few months and when I went off, it felt like I had the flu. I am on Lexapro now, a very low dose. I appreciate the input! Tina > > Hi Tina, > My dd( who will be 13 in 2 weeks) has been on zoloft since age 5. Once we got down to 12.5mg she was still holding her own, and than we discontinued it. She ended up lying on the floor non functional. She had to go back up to 25 mg, and now we have been shaving the pill down ,just a tiny slice off every day for a month, each time shaving off a tiny bit more. > > I know this sounds extreme, but when they have been on it for a long time, than go off, they can have a rebound of panic as well as a severe flu like syndrome. > > Hope this helps some > hugs > Judy > > > > > ________________________________ > > To: > Sent: Monday, October 19, 2009 3:42:31 PM > Subject: Discontinuing Zoloft ... suggestions? > > > My dd, age 17, decided she is ready to wean off meds after being on Zoloft for over 3 years (Ack!). She had mild OCD (unofficial) , but her dx is anxiety/panic and sensory processing disorder (dx when she was 5). The Zoloft was a godsend with the sensory and the panic, and the few ocd symptoms she had (it was flaring, along with the panic) all but disappeared. I have to admit I am nervous about her going off meds totally but she will be 18 next year so I guess I have to let her try. She was on 100mg, dropped to 75mg for 6 weeks, and her dr. dropped her again last week to 50mg. That is not very much for her at all, but I guess so far so good. > > My question is has anyone else helped their older child discontinue an SSRI? Is there anything that helps the body adjust? Vitamins, etc? I notice she has been extra tired lately. I have to admit I'm a bit worried ... this is a stressful year for her (she's a junior) and she wants to try and graduate early. I sense she wants to be out of public high school and into college where she has a little more control over her environment and classes. The sensory overload of large public HS is a lot. Probably not the best time to go off meds, but she wanted to! > > Any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated! > Tina > > > > >
Guest guest
Hi Tina, Yes, it can cause fatigue and flu symptoms. My daughter couldn't even get up when we discontinued it.It seemed as long as there was some in her system she wasn't too bad, but everytime we stopped it completely(we have tried several times over the years) she got this way. Just taper very slowly! Best Wishes and Hugs judy ________________________________ To: Sent: Monday, October 19, 2009 4:50:21 PM Subject: Re: Discontinuing Zoloft ... suggestions? Fatigue??? Guest guest
Thanks, Judy. That helps! I think I need to go in and talk to the asst. principal about this. We have a letter from her p-doc in her file about the tardies (explaining its due to her issues) but she didn't want to use it (she doesn't want to look weird, I don't think), but she spent half of last year in detention because of the lateness. We don't want that to happen again this year. We have a new AP and he doesn't know her so I'll have to go " introduce myself " and do the needful. Sigh. Can I ask why you have tried to discontinue the meds? I know I am being nosy, just say so and ignore me, if so! Take care, Tina > > > > Hi Tina, > > My dd( who will be 13 in 2 weeks) has been on zoloft since age 5. Once we got down to 12.5mg she was still holding her own, and than we discontinued it. Guest guest
Tina, I don't mind at all. My daughter will be 13 in 2 weeks and has not been able to " be as skinny " as she would like while on the zoloft. I want her to stay on it, but she is at the age where she doesn't want to be on them because they make her " fat " . Guest guest
Good luck with the tapering, Judy. Its so hard when you know something helps but there are downsides also. Last school year my daughter got SO apathetic on Zoloft and had trouble attending and focusing. We had her tested for ADHD (she didn't have it!) and the psychologist who did her testing said the inattention was due to a combo of factors, including the anxiety, sensory issues and zoloft apathy. Go figure! Tina > > > > > > Hi Tina, > > > My dd( who will be 13 in 2 weeks) has been on zoloft since age 5. Once we got down to 12.5mg she was still holding her own, and than we discontinued it.
