Guest guest
Please don't move to Atlanta! I lived there for 4 years. It is the WORST state in the country for education (there are some good schools, but overall, NOT) They have a horrible reputation for special ed services especially. And the further away from the city you get the worse it is. It is only pretty from a distance. Most of those old plantation houses are falling down, and it just gets depressing. Besides, they are mostly in the deep south part of the state. And the bugs are humungous!!! Not to mention snakes...one of my client's mom's killed a big rattler in their driveway while I was there...yuck.... Guest guest
I live near Stone Mountain. You can probably find it on the internet. I am afraid most of the " moss in the trees " country side is in south Georgia. Atlanta's growth over the past 20 years changed that. However, there is a lot of history here. Come visit anytime, I'll show you around! Atlanta The two places that I have always wanted to go are Georgia and Ireland. Ever since I was little. Is it so beautiful there? All the pictures of Georgia and the big beautiful houses and trees with moss and Oh I want to see it all so bad. My husband and I almost transferred there in his job, but I was scared if there would be snakes or big creepy bugs and stuff and we would be REALLY far from family or friends. I have been all the way over to Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Mississippi and stuff, but never past that to the East. I want to someday and the reason I want to see Ireland is because it looks so green and beautiful too. That's why I live in Oregon, the Green --- wrote: > I am from Atlanta so summers in Orlando don't bother > me! > > > > > __________________________________________________
Guest guest
I think education is a Southern thing. Here in Knoxville our kids have to share books because the county won't fund the school systems. We have a dropout rate of I think around 40%. If society doesn't even recognize education for the average joe, how can we expect them to embrace education for all citizens, including those citizens with autism. Having always lived in TN, though, I don't know how much worse it is other places. You see stuff like Jay walking in CA and those people are complete idiots. It really doesn't take funding out the wazzoo to make a good school, it really takes teachers who give a crap and administration who supports them giving a crap. There's no excuse for a teacher not teaching the fifty states, heck, that's just a map. Debi
Guest guest
Parkview, huh? I had a client in that district when I lived there...his family won a series of law suits against the school for not providing an appropriate education, and the school was supposed to pay for his in home program. They never saw the money though, and went back to court over and over again, by the time they finally started getting money, the school had wasted so much MORE money in court and lawyer fees, it was ridiculous. Hopefully you will have better experiences! Guest guest
I think you hit the nail on the head with the administrative support thing...I taught in GA public schools for a brief, horrible period of time. I hated it everyday, and it had nothing to do with the kids or teaching. It was the lack of admin support or concern...Examples: I had a $150 budget for the year. This was for severe and profoundly disabled preschoolers. You can get about 2 toys with that, with the adaptive switches and all. But the school managed $5,000 worth of golf equipment for the gym (we didn't get to go to gym). But the final straw was when I asked for a consistent classroom aide instead of a new one every few days, and was told that all anyone expected was for me to keep the kids clean and alive til the end of the day. I quit almost immediately after that. That is why there are not enough good teachers in school districts like that (this was Cobb County, GA). There might be some teachers who are more nobel than me and would stick around longer for the kids, but I was losing weight, having trouble sleeping, and other symptoms of depression. I had to quit for my mental and physical health. Amnesty > > I think education is a Southern thing. Here in Knoxville our kids have > to share books because the county won't fund the school systems.
