I think a few of these studies need to be combined to see what is going on. I think brainy students are less risky because they aren't invited into the "cool" circles that do these things. Most of the brainy people are outcasts of their own sort and so aren't in the peer groups that do these things.

In my experience, I had a few friends who weren't into drinking, partying and all of that, or at least not much. The reason for that was mostly out of rebellion against what the cool people who tormented us did. I myself used to say that we were better than those people because they had to get drunk to have fun and stand each other's company. I should also point out that I don't drink because alcoholism runs in the family and I don't want to turn into a drunk and alcohol also makes me quite sick anyway.

Then again, I did have some friends that would party and drink, but they didn't do it around me. They were smart people, but were somehow more accepted into the cool circles than I was. It seemed like they came around me when they wanted to use their brains but went with the other people when they wanted to damage their brains.

If these brainy kids were accepted into the cool crowd, I would be willing to bet that they would be swiftly corrupted into drinking and risky sex just to maintain that status.

Personally I do not see why someone would want to get drunk or have risky sex with some random other person I do not know.
