Guest guest
Hi, Tina, your posts caught my eye because you said you're on a low dose of Lexapro; so is my daughter at 15. She's been on this almost one year now; we tried a higher dosage (up to 20mg) and it made her OCD much worse. She's back down to 10 and is maintaining extremely well outside of home, at school, and everywhere else. In fact, she's even become more involved at school and is much more outgoing. But at home, it's different. She's still " ok " , but the OCD stuff is worse. Her two biggest things right now are a feeling she has to go the bathroom all the time or it will " back " up and make her sick (stemming from a cat of ours who died from a blocked urinary system recently) and a fear of cleaning supplies (an old issue that's come back). She wants to have kids someday and I know I'm jumping the gun, but I worry about this on the Lexapro. She's asked me if she can have kids while on Lexapro and i don't know. Also, in your experience, is is normal for someone to do so well in public, but " let it all out " at home? I am actually quite amazed at how well she is doing in school, and I'm honestly afraid the pressure of that is why the OCD is showing up more at home. The Lexapro has been a big help; it just seems strange to me that a higher dose would make it worse?! Anyway, I feel like I'm rambling, but anything you can tell me about being on Lexapro would be helpful. She's also gained weight on it and we got her some TeenSlim from Native Remedies to try and help with that, because she hates that part of it! Guest guest
Debbie, I will just start rambling and hopefully something will help! I started on Lexapro a couple of years ago because my anxiety started to flare really badly with menopausal hormone fluctuations. It was OCD-ish in nature (mostly hyper-responsiblity, checking, needing reassurance, etc.). I went to my dd's p-doc, who is now mine also! He said my official dx is GAD although I have tendencies toward the OCD (plus I had the ocd-spectrum of anorexia). At any rate, years before I had been on Zoloft for a few months for depression/anxiety but went off after 3 months becasue of the sexual side effects. And it made me feel so flat. I told him this and he put me on Lexapro, becasue it is less likely to have the sexual side effects. I am on a VERY low dose (5mg. every other day). If I take more than that I have NO libido whatsoever. Its enough to take the edge off my anxiety and I manage the rest with yoga, reframing my thoughts, prayer, etc. I didn't have much weight gain with it but I hear some do. I have never heard of it making the OCD worse. It helped me not to go down the " rabbit trails " of obsession that I usually would. As to her being more OCD at home, maybe its just that home is her comfort zone and she can do her rituals there. I know I was very careful when I was at school ... I didn't want to look weird there. My dd, when she was bad patch (before meds) was still okay at school, but totally melted down at home. Hope something here helps! Feel free to e-mail me privately if you need to. Oh, about the having children. I was 51 when I went on Lexapro, so I don't know if its okay for pregnancy. Your p-doc could best answer that one! Take care, Tina > > Hi, Tina, > your posts caught my eye because you said you're on a low dose of Lexapro; so is my daughter at 15.
