Society just doesn't like having its hypocrisy pushed into the open. Lots of people like to say that appearance doesn't matter and things like that, that everyone should like everyone else no matter their difference.

In reality, people are very much the opposite. They discriminate all the time based on appearance, seeming status and wealth, behavior, intelligence, etc. Thing is, they don't like to think that they are really like that. When something like this comes along, they are made to think about it and they don't like it.
