give it 20 minutes b4 bed and make sure your child is not running around. make

your child relax...melatonin is a beautiful thing!

How long before bed do you give the melatonin for the best results? It said

on the bottle right before bed but I'm wondering if an extra half hour or

hour would give it a chance to begin working better or not?

Our pediatrician said to take it right after dinner, which would be about

1.5 hours before bed.

I take melatonin about 20 minutes before I want to go to sleep. I take

it and then do some relaxing reading and it makes me very sleepy and

works great. If I were to take it 1 1/2 hours before bed and continued

my normal activities, it would have no effect on me whatsoever. My 2 cents!

Hi ,

We just started our dd9 on Melatonin last Wednesday night. She takes 3mg at 8pm.

Then she takes a relaxing shower for about 30 minutes, a little mild tv while we

blow-dry her hair, and then bedtime routine (brush teeth, pj's, etc.) and a

little reading. She has been getting sleepy by about 9pm, and actually to sleep

between 9:15-9:30. While our peditrician also said 30-45 minutes before bedtime,

we are finding this relaxing routine to be beneficial all the way around

(although last night she seemed to get sleepy quicker, so we may have to

adjust).

She has severe anxiety and bad thoughts/images at bedtime, so this has been a

miraculous thing to see her be able to fight off the OCD and get sleepy...I

realized how long it had been since I'd actually see her YAWN!  :-)

Good luck, and the peditrician did say we could go up to 5mg if needed.

My daughter takes melatonin, but if you don't take it and relax , it won't work.

I give it to her 20-30 minutes before she is getting into bed. I make sure she

already has her pajamas on, etc.

Ther have been occasions where I have given it to her and she would get a phone

call, or her sister would want her to play a game with her, etc, and if she got

to wound up, it was like she missed the opportunity to sleep , and was than wide

awake.

Hope this makes sense

Hugs

Judy,

That's what I was trying to say as well. If I take it and then one of

my kids need something, or my hubby wants to chat for awhile, etc., then

it doesn't work for me. I think everyone just needs to experiment and

see what works best for their child. However, I wanted to mention this

so someone tries all options before thinking it doesn't work for them.

Hi Dina,

I remember the first time I gave it to my daughter , and I gave it about 2 hours

before bed, and it didn't work. I was thinking . " Okay this isn't going to work

for her, " but than after talking with her doctor and realizing I had to give it

right before bed, it made all the difference in the world.

I was glad I decided to try her on it, because in the past she was on all types

of sleep meds.

If I would have just tried the melatonin, I could have surpassed all those

drugs.

Hugs

Judy
