Guest guest
a family friend was a lawyer, so we only had to pay court costs.here is a link with information.http://trusts-estates.lawyers.com/guardianship-conservatorship/ I went to a workshop once put on by some lawyers, and they said that full guardianship is the last resort...guardianship strips away the right to vote, the right to get married, etc...so it should only be used for those people who are incapable of understanding about voting, those who are not going to marry, etc. You can get a limited form of guardianship where you can have financial control (that way, no one can trick them into buying something, or get control of their money(for example) if you don't opt for full guardianship, you need to consider at least getting medical power of attorney, so that you are consulted concerning medical care..otherwise, from the way it was explained at the workshop, once your child turns 18, medical care providers are not legally obligated to discuss your child's health care with you, and, if they want to be difficult about it, they can even exclude you from medical decision-making for your child. kathy Can you get guardianship w/o a lawyer would be the next question. Court fees are what would run around $100. We used a lawyer on Josiah's dad's (my husband) legal insurance that comes with his benefits (for an additional charge). So that is how OUR charges were just the court fees. I just remembered that my BIL, who is a lawyer, told me at one point that he thought I could file the papers on my own. I did not choose to try......Maybe someone on this list has done it. Hope you can find an answer that could help others. Shirley RE: [DownSyndromeInfoExchange] Texas family loses custody of daughter with Ds because they refuse to put her on psychotropic drugs OMG!!!!! We are going downhill fast. Our society has turned into a manipulative nightmare where the courts, lawyers and even our own justice system is used as a weapon to strike us down instead of protecting us! In the meantime, innocent children are shuffled like a cheap deck of cards to the highest bidder. I hope no one who reads this has the audacity to blame the parents for this happening. Even if you have the thousands of dollars it takes to get guardianship for your child, it can still be challenged by corrupt people, so that’s no guarantee! I mean, who is really benefitting here? Lawyers from both sides are making huge profits off of this while their beautiful daughter’s disability/ss checks are now in the hands of some very mean people. People who feel no guilt or remorse for doing it or for hurting a family in the worst way possible. Where have we gone wrong? It’s depressing that integrity, high values and the very basic faith that built our country are continually and callously ignored! Then people who do stand up for honor and integrity are publicly picked apart and hen-pecked for things others believe are petty or not up to their own stuck up values. How many times do we have to watch another great person toppled into nothingness for daring to admit they go to church or they believe in God? Manipulative people attack religion and put into our hearts that so-in-so’s (insert religion here) faith is corrupt and we should discredit them entirely. It is not us who suffers. It is the most innocent like this girl and our own children who will suffer when our beliefs become wishy-washy and easy to push aside. There are too many examples to ignore, and I pray we will wake up soon. First is was the Catholic church, and now all Catholics are pedophiles. Palin’s faith was attacked relentlessly, for everything from being pro-life to praying the wrong way, and now any of us who dare to admit that God is in control is a religious wacko. Now the Mormon faith is the next to go down. I don’t care how anyone feels personally about any of these religions, if we refuse to see the pattern of systematic destruction of everything faith based in this country, we will tip-toe into our own destruction leading our children there hand and hand. I honestly fear we will never recover. I expect this kind of thing to get worse, We are driving our own cars on the fast lane to serfdom, and are blinded to what needs to happen to fix it. As our economy continues to tank and the individual poverty rate rises exponentially for the new working poor, people will take advantage without a care in the world who they hurt, even more. I see very little honor left in this country by the people who supposedly work to protect us. God save us. I apologize for the lengthy rant. My fear spills out sometimes when it should not. Time for me to shut up and go back to playing bejeweled.
