Guest guest
, The caveat with what I say is that everyone is different and responds in their own way. My daughter started zoloft at 12.5 mg and responded within 4 days. The doc tried higher doses gradually up to 37.5 but she had side effects of impulsive bad behavior. She's now back down to 12.5 mg and the OCD is under control. She is also taking tenex, 1/2 mg twice a day for attention issues but I'm not sure it's helping. I hope things get better for your daughter soon > Hi there. My name is and I posted on this group awhile ago and > then kind of have just been reading once in awhile. Guest guest
HI , My 9 yo daughter is on 160 mg of Zoloft. A therapeutic dose for OCD is 150-200 mg daily for many people. It can take several weeks for effects to show up, although at our worst we were increasing her dosage about every 1-2 weeks. See what your doctor thinks, but your daughter is really just on a starter dose and this does not mean the Zoloft won't work. Hope things improve soon. > > Subject: Another intro and question on meds. > To: > Date: Monday, October 19, 2009, 1:55 AM > Hi there. Guest guest
SSRI's can take up to 2 weeks before the full effect is seen, although some people see results in a week. Perhaps, your doc will increase it on a weekly basis. I have found that overall, any med my son was taking really took about a month before I saw very dramatic improvements. It's hard to wait, but it may be best since side effects are often dose related and could potentially make her anxiety worse. Are you doing therapy too? Research shows that it's the combination that is most effective. You seem to be doing the right things (not accommodating her). Hope it gets better soon. Bonnie > > Hi there. Guest guest
I'm so sorry you are having troubles--both of my girls and I take Luvox and have for several years. It took nine weeks for the medication to reach its full effect. One of my girls takes 300 mg, one takes 250 mg, and I take 200 mg. My oldest also takes Abilify to " boost " the Luvox but my youngest and I do not need to. The fun never ends, does it? Kelley in NV Another intro and question on meds. Hi there. My name is and I posted on this group awhile ago and then kind of have just been reading once in awhile. Last time that I posted my daughter was diagnosed with anorexia, but then we realized that it was just another form of her OCD. She was put on Prozac, which was effective for about 9 months. She is doing great with her eating, but a new compulsion has started. She is now doing a lot of tapping and touching rituals, sometimes she will also do blinking rituals, holding her breath, etc. It takes her forever to do simple things. We have a split level house and her room is in the downstairs and she has a fear of going up the bottom set of stairs which lead to the front door and also to the set of stairs that goes up to the rest of our house. She basically has to have someone " push " her up the stairs or else she can take upwards of 20 minutes getting up the stairs. The prozac was no longer effective and she weened off of that and has started zoloft. The doctor started her only at 25mg of it. Now she has increased for 25 and has been at that dose for about a week. There has been no improvement. So my questions is, what medications have you found that work best and if your child takes Zoloft and it is working- what dose is your child taking and how long did it take before it started working? Thanks
Guest guest
My 10 (at the time) yo daughter took 50 mg of Zoloft for about a year and 75 for another half a year and it worked well. At first she seemed to worsen when starting the Zoloft but by the time she'd taken it for a month, things began to improve steadily. Then it stopped working all together after a year and a half or so. Right now we are on day 18 of Celexa and I noticed the beginning of improvement after 10 days. Guest guest
I also meant to mention that after 75mg wasn't working we increased to 125 with no difference in her anxiety level. It was then that we switched.
Guest guest
Hi I am and I have a 10 year old girl who is severe OCD. , below you practically described my daughter. She has to touch everything with the back of her hand. She is touching so much that her hands are bleeding - leaving trails of blood marks on the walls wherever she goes. She even touches the floor with the top of her feet. They two have been rubbed raw. She needs either my husband to carry her or me to " faux carry " her which is essentially pushing her up the stairs. She is on 60 mg Prozac, 300 mg Trileptal, 2 mg Tenex, 18 mg Stratera and 7.5 mg Deplin - none of which appears to be helping her. I just got back from the doctor with her and I was hoping he was going to switch her to Zoloft, but he opted to increase the Trileptal instead. He has said we are dealing with pure OCD - so it seems like we are treating her symptom instead of her problem. Her mood is bad, because she is sick of touching, mad at herself, depressed, angry that she has to struggle so much and that she has no joy in her life. I really trust her doctor, but I have trusted so many before. Right now we are just trying to get her in a place where she can even do ERP. She has obsessions about the things that you even do during ERP. She doesn't want to talk about OCD, she doesn't want to fight it, and she doesn't want to receive any positive reinforcement. Maybe the Trileptal will help her mood stabilize, but if it doesn't give her any relief for her obsessions, it's hard to imagine her frustration and angry diminishing. Has anyone one been in this position where the doctor added or increased a mood stabilizer? Did it help? , was your daughter switched from Prozac to Zoloft? What dose did you start at? took 10 mg for a week when she was three, when we increased it to 20 - her OCD exploded. At that time our plan was to get it to 30mg, but we never got there - we just took her off. 150-200mg seems so much compared to what we were doing with her - of course she was only 6 then and about 40 lbs. Now she is 10 and nearly 80 lbs. I am glad I found this group. You are all so kind and helpful. Thank you. _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Kusmin Sent: Monday, October 19, 2009 7:38 AM To: Subject: Re: Another intro and question on meds. HI , My 9 yo daughter is on 160 mg of Zoloft. Guest guest
Hi, . Our son hasn't taken Zoloft, but is on Celexa for the second time. It seems that different meds work differently, for different people. So some might do better on one kind, yet others on another. I wish there was a way to narrow it down better, but it seems to come down to just trying them. The dosage can depend on a number of factors. Age, size, severity of OCD/anxiety, and then like I mentioned, just how she responds to a particular medication. The first time Josh was on meds, we noticed improvement at the end of the first week. The second time, he was older, larger, and his OCD was much worse, coupled with GAD. It tooks weeks to reach a point that he improved. But, we did see small bits of improvement during that process. Is your daughter doing any ERP (exposure and response prevention) therapy? I ask because with Josh, even with the meds, he had a lot of rituals. The Celexa brought the intensity of it all down, so he could concentrate on the therapy. The therapy addressed the rituals and helped him overcome them. I'm glad it wasn't anorexia. But OCD can be wretched too. Hope you see improvement soon. BJ > > Hi there. My name is and I posted on this group awhile ago and then kind of have just been reading once in awhile. Guest guest
, I just wanted to give you a cyber hug ((((())))). I'm sorry you are in such a rough place with your daughter. Made my heart ache for you both, just to read it. I hope and pray something works for you soon. Guest guest
, My daughter (aged 9, about 90 lbs) has only been on Zoloft. I am allergic to Prozac, so we tried Zoloft first (not knowing whether or not she would share my allergy), and it has been helpful--although just now she had a screaming fit because I would not tell her what her wash time was this morning. Her dad (an economist and number lover) has worked out a system in which she has to make or beat her average wash times in order to get rewarded, but, as with everything else with her, I am afraid she is getting too locked in and rigid with this system. Anyhow, she started at about 25 mg/day last November and stayed on a low dose until spring (I think) when her anxiety went way up, her ability to function went way down, and we began pushing the dose up quickly. Now, she is on slower increases. Although she has not had any problems with Zoloft, my father-in-law was bipolar, so they want to watch for any signs of mania (so far none although she does have OCD rages, they are much less frequent on the Zoloft). It is very hard to fight OCD when you are depressed. I hope the doctor can help with her mood as well as her anxiety. For the bleeding hands and raw feet, I suggest putting Aquaphor on her as often as you can if she will let you. It is similar to vaseline and can be purchased in a large jar. When Lynn's underarms and arms looked like she had a bad sunburn or even a burn this summer, we used Aquaphor as often as we could to protect her skin. Currently those areas are good, but we are using it on her neck which is a bit raw. Hang in there. Your daughter can get better. Try telling her that you believe this for her even if she cannot. Sending you hugs and best wishes, > > Subject: Re: Another intro and question on meds. > To: > Date: Monday, October 19, 2009, 2:29 PM > , I just wanted to give you a > cyber hug ((((())))). > > I'm sorry you are in such a rough place with your > daughter. Guest guest
Hi , my son used to do a lot of touching OCD. Was wondering, does she ever get " stuck " touching anything or does she just touch and move on? Oh, and he also had some things with touching with his feet. I recall (this was years ago) that he went barefoot all the time so wondered if wearing shoes would make a difference - nope, didn't matter if shoes were on either, he still would do some things with his feet too. So sorry your daughter is going thru this! Hope the increase in med works! > > Hi I am and I have a 10 year old girl who is severe OCD. , below > you practically described my daughter.
