I too have been thinking about how to respond to the posts I've seen here.

First, I'm not offended by the "living dead" comment, because, like , I have felt this way many times. I've often described the feeling as what a ghost might feel like. Most of the time it passes unseen. Other times it is noticed by people who pretend not to have seen. Sometimes people to notice and react badly. Only rarely does someone react positively. What I mean is that most of the time I will pass unnoticed, which is not a bad thing as far as I'm concerned. Even glancing eye contact isn't a problem. What is annoying is the ones who see but get a bad look in their eye. The body language too can also reveal much. Worse is the ones who notice and actively give insult. Both of these are frequently combined when so low order male is showing off for females. It is so vexing to see decent looking women with trash men, but they have the nerve to look at me like I'm the leper, or in this case ghost.

Very often people do refuse to take our council. Many times my advice has gone unheeded with bad results. Interestingly, these same kinds of people sometimes call me when they need something because they think I'll be able to do it. I have to say it is very amusing how many times people think I'm a computer whiz because of my appearance when in truth I know just the basics about how to use them, since I find computers stubborn and temperamental things that seem to delight in causing me grief.

Now some comments about the undead.

First, legends do have that some undead are surrounded by a "necrotic aura" that can kill plants and lesser animals like insects, mice, etc. It may also be able to spoil food and drink, leaving even plain water taste foul and unwholesome. Other creatures notice this aura as a feeling of cold and something unnatural being close by. Most kinds will just have a feeling of cold and unnaturalness about them and nothing more.

Liches are rather new in mythology. There were maybe one or two in Russian mythos, but other than that they seem to be a 20th century creation. Simply, they are a powerful wizard or priest who has used magic to transform their bodies into an undead state so they become effectively immortal. Perhaps the best known one would be Voldemort from Harry Potter. He isn't called a lich, but he probably is. One step of the transformation is supposed to be an act of irredeemable evil, though the mythos also includes a qualifier that that probably isn't really necessary, but was a corruption of the process told to certain seekers who consulted demons. In other words, the demons convinced these seekers to do great evil in order to gain a powerful asset for evil.

The appearance of liches also varies. Some are described as skeletal or mummified, a few are described as rotting corpses, and a few look mostly normal, if a little pale and slightly "off." Being powerful spellcasters, they could develop spells to make themselves look normal via illusions or actual, physical transformations.

Most liches are evil, but some aren't. Given that reputation and their undead nature, this would mean that they would indeed be outcasts amongst the living. It is also likely their advice would be scorned because most people would consider that the lich was trying to fool them or cause them harm.

This is in contrast with vampire who, in certain ways are more socially accepted, though this is in part due not only to a fairly human appearance, but also mid affecting powers. So, even though the vampires need to eat people and the lich doesn't, vampires get on better in society.

Now, vampire mythos is ancient, global and mostly unchanged until Bram Stoker. Virtually every culture on earth has myths about usually human appearing beings that drain the life out of their victims. From the Celtic version that appeared as a beautiful woman to lone men in the woods and danced with them, drawing out their blood through skin contact, to the Chinese version that could drain blood at a distance, to the Pacific Islands where the vampire looked human by day but turned into a giant mosquito at night and dropped its stinger through the roofs of it's victim's houses to drain their blood.

In all of these legends, the vampire was a bestial predator. Some were returned spirits, others were demons, and some were a combination of the two or a creation of demons sent forth the wreak havoc. It was only with Bram Stoker's "Dracula" that the vampire was made a noble with wealth and influence. The vampire's image was further changed by n era actors performing play version of "Dracula" or like stories. Since actors were not well paid, or respected, in those days, money was tight. So the actors frequently wore their regular clothing on stage. Since Dracula was supposed to be a noble and the best actors played his part, the actors would wear their best clothes in the performance, which also allowed them to walk out of the theatre for a night on the town in the best clothes without delay. This enhanced the image of a vampire as a charming, sophisticated thing. More modern times have hyped the erotic aspects of vampires, also something from Stoker's novel. I find it very amusing that the very powers it would use to make prey docile, just like how a snake poisons its prey, seems to increase its appeal. As time goes on, the vampires have gained more and more powers, or lost certainly vulnerabilities, such as being killed by sunlight, etc.

Its interesting and does seem to be a study in human society. A lich, which has no need to harm people and with its vast studies could probably help them, would be shunned, but so many would willingly allow a predator, the vampire, in their midst.
