This is no surprise at all. Kids have always been mean to those who excel. It is worse today because the typical public school kid is pumped full of groundless self-esteem, making them far more sensitive to any challenge to their ego. Seeing someone do better than them, or someone who seems smarter, well that just can't be. You ain't better than me!! So the smart kids gets beaten down by the caveman.

It is distressing that the schools will do nothing about such violence, even as extreme as this. Small wonder that father went after the bully. Maybe school if school officials had to pay out of pocket for the bullied kid's medical bills things would shape up in a hurry. If not, then the principals and other useless bureaucrats could end up in the poor house.
