Guest guest
Sherrie, I am sorry to hear that things have been so hard for you. I do understand as we have been trying to decide for 3 years now if my daughter is ADHD, high anxiety or OCD or all three. We have treated the ADHD and anxiety but just recently it has become very clear she is also ocd, too. She is on medication and is in cognitive behavior therapy. I also understand your hesitation in using medication because we have had some bad experiences with them...particularly Zoloft. It was horrible for our daughter. Not all of them have been bad though. Thankfully she has adjusted to Celexa recently and it is enough of a dose to help the anxiety so that she can get through the CBT. We have been through 3 therapists and seem to have found one that seems to be helping us make progress. I would not hesitate to move on to another therapist if I did not feel like she was the one for our daughter. I guess all of that is to say that there is help out there. I have been to the point of a breakdown - all of this hurts, it is draining and we parents of ocd children never get a break from it. One thing that really has helped us to explain ocd to our daughter is to tell her that she sometimes has a " brain hiccup " - a misfiring of a neuron that " tricks " her brain into needing to do things in a certain order or have " bad " thoughts. This has helped her to understand that she is not bad or crazy and that she has the power to overcome these problems by using the " tools in her toolbox. " This gives her the motivation to overcome it and not feel bad about it. I hope this helps in some way.
