Guest guest
Hi jannette,How exciting! Tks for sharing.PatSent from my iPadOn Jan 12, 2011, at 7:35 AM, Jannette Janson de de la Lastra wrote: Hi: I don`t know if this has been mentioned before in the group but, since it has helped my son, I will post it anyways. My son , 5 years old, has a lot of difficulty with fine motor skills, and holding the pencil to draw is very difficult for him. Up to now he was able to draw very uneven circles, make horizontal and vertical lines (going from dot to dot, of course not straight lines) and that was about it. When given a paper to draw he would just scribble on it in a very desorganized manner. He does color figures trying (not able yet) to respect outer lines, limits. Yesterday was the first day of school after the holidays for (5 years old) and the teacher showed me this new pencil that she had gotten form Amazon to try it with him. Honestly I did not make much of it. When I came back to pick him up, she had a very big smile and told me to come in to see s work. Her words were "As God as my witness did this all on his own, I did not help at all". made two drawings in different pages, very similar drawing that he called a "Cow" (his favorite animal). The drawing is a big oval, with vertical lines as legs, a tail, an eye and one of them has 2 horns (It looks more like a cricket ) but they are very similar and they show that this was what he was intending to draw. Needless to say I am extremely happy with the improvement. I do believe that all our practice on the boad with chalk and other things have helped but maybe the pencil with an easier grip, in a way that he can control it better has also make a big difference. Today again, he made a drawing that is not only scribbles on a page. Guest guest
Jannette, Thanks for posting this! My , also 5, is very much as you described your as far as being able to hold a pencil or crayon or marker and have enough control to draw or write. He does do a little bit of drawing on his magnetic doodler. He used to draw a rough circle with sticks coming out all over, kind of like a sun, but he would say it was a cat. Now, he will draw a rough circle or oval with two dots for eyes and then smaller circles all around the edges (ears, arms, and legs?) and when asked about it, he will name someone in the family. But the way he holds a writing instrument is very awkward, and if I try to place his fingers in a more natural position, he immediately changes back to an awkward one. And he cannot trace a letter or number or connect dots, because he cannot control the writing instrument well enough. Plus, he is left handed. I've never seen these pencils before. I'm going to order some and try them with . THANKS! > > Hi: > > I don`t know if this has been mentioned before in the group but, since it has helped my son, I will post it anyways. > > My son , 5 years old, has a lot of difficulty with fine motor skills, and holding the pencil to draw is very difficult for him. Guest guest
Hi Pat, maybe it helped that the teacher got several pencils like this and other children were also using them. With I find that sometimes I have to do something myself without inviting him, for him to see me and then he will want to do it. Like eating yougurt, he would not want to try it (this is an issue with him, trying new foods) so I decided to eat yougurt every afternoon when we were having a snack and one day he just took my spoon and put it in his mouth. Maybe if you use the pencil for a couple of days and give it to your other daughters, ignoring , she will then want to use it..Just an idea.
