Good points.

HK said: "From the biomedical standpoint, this has already happened. The research that I work on is back at square one, we are back to the research and development of new antibiotics which are not like any already marketed. "

And that's part of the problem. The further out we have to go into this research, the more dangerous the germs will become because they will adapt to these new drugs as well. The simple fact is that even if a drug kills 99.9% of the germs, that 0.1% that survives will be the genesis of a new strain with the seeds of greater resistance. The more this repeats, the more refined that trait becomes.

HK said: "True, we would be in some deep trouble if most any virus that is spread through bodily fluids were to become airborne. Now, to stay positive, the likelihood of this occurring is slim. "

This is true. That's why I said we don't know if HIV will remain active if it does combine with other viruses or if it will be simply inert material. Human DNA contains such material where viral DNA ended up into the Human Genome. It doesn't seem to have any affect, at least not that we are aware of. I agree that we should keep up with research, but we should look into things beyond traditional drugs.

HK said: "Most bugs lose their resistance after a small number of generations, so theoretically penicillin could work again but we need to knock it out of the market for a few years first. To do that we need a replacement for the time."

I wasn't aware of that. If true, that might be an option. Another option would be using ionized/ozonated water for cleaning in hospitals and such. It seems to be very effective, but it is expensive because of the equipment and because it doesn't remain potent for very long so it can't be mass produced and stored. Another option for some infections about be the use of phages, viruses and bacteria that eat other bacteria. It is used in parts of Europe and seems effective, but the FDA is standing in the way of even basic research into this.

The flus would come back strong this fall. What I think would be productive would be to encourage people to see to their health over the summer, to stock up on food, soap, masks and surgical gloves. If the flu does get bad, people could stay home for a time and let the disease burn itself out some. It would also help to encourage disease etiquette training, such as coughing or sneezing into your sleeve or coat rather than your hand or not covering at all. We should encourage washing hands and getting rid of antibiotic soaps and generally being tidier. All these things could be easily done and would have a great effect.

Lastly I think it would be useful to have a deal with businesses so that if an employee get sick they could take days off without fear of being fired or replaced. I know there are sick days now, but this should be avialable for flu emergencies. Of course, if this is abused, then the person in question should be disciplined. Improving hygiene and sanitation in hospitals and doctor's offices would also be a great idea and would save more money by reducing the number of people who get sick AT such places than making all medical records electronic, and thus vulnerable to computer outages and hackers. (Knows this first hand because in the last month, computers at my mother's doctor's offices have been down 3 times that we know of.)
