;Thanks for bird observations! and the reminder that there is beauty in the world! My mom was a bird watcher, I was more interested in plants, but did learn to recognize some birds.renaissanzeladySubject: Bird observationsTo: FAMSecretSociety Received: Sunday, March 1, 2009, 11:26

Last week I found a sock-like finch feeder at the hardware store. Finches had never come to my regular bird feeder, but it seemed worth taking a shot. Within two days of hanging it up in a dogwood tree just off the kitchen, there were as many as six finches around.

What I have found interesting about this feeder is the behavior of the various bird species. So far, the finches have been the only birds to actually use the feeder. Often times only one or maybe two will be on it because they don't like sharing it. I do, however, have a picture of four of them on there at one time. Other birds, like dark-eyed juncos and house sparrows, will be on the ground under the feeder picking up cast off seeds but have shown no interesting in trying to use the feeder itself. Other birds, like the tufted titmouse and chickadees, will land in the branches and look at the feeder, but haven't tried to land on it. Bigger birds like cardinals and blue jays, etc. have no interest in it at all.

I'll post a couple of pictures later on.

We used to have a neighbor who put out a hummingbird feeder. I thought

they were nuts, but within a day or two, there were probably half a

dozen hummingbirds around. I was amazed because in all the 30 something

years of my life up until that time I had not seen one hummingbird in

the neighborhood.

I saw a hummingbird for the first time last year when I was watering some new plants. Later I bought a feeder and put it out by those plants but I'm not sure if it ever uses it or not because I never saw it again. Still, I'm planning to plant a few things this year that should have lots of flowers and might attract them again. Not bothering with the expensive bulbs and fancier things like my mother wants to do since almost all of that died in spite of my best efforts (wrong soil types and also we are in a drought). I'll see if that works out.
