Re: Bullying

My son has been bullied constantly, as well.  Though I do have to say that he is

in 9th grade and doesn't seem to have a problem with it anymore.  However, he

has taken karate for the past 2 years and that has helped TREMENDOUSLY.  He

really carries himself differently.

However, if I were to go through it again with him or one of my other children,

I would get it taped immediately.  I would buy a small portable voice activated

recorder -- you can even get pens with built in recorders these days or many

other hidden devices -- so that I could personally hear what was going on, and

then present concrete evidence to the school and the kid's parents -- and to the

police if warranted.  I have seen parents who will deny up and down that their

child did anything have to take a different stand when they are forced to

listen/watch.

I don't think our kids or any kid for that matter should have to put up with

this at all, and even one more day is a day too many.

Having that happen in band makes me really mad.

Just my opinion ... and I'm so sorry your family is going through this.

I think school policies may vary with regard to bullying and of course the

environmental culture (values and beliefs) affect the way bullying is handled.

However, I think that there is no way around a school having the liability and

responsibility to provide for the safety and welfare of students who attend any

school (especially minors). You can call the behavior bullying or criminal, but

the school should act. There are laws against harassment, assault, and stalking

and I think that these are some of things involved in bullying.

Keep a notebook of incidents with dates and action taken. Put the school on

notice that if they do not act, you will. That may require you to notify the

authorities (police, superintendent) if they do not take action. It sounds

harsh, but if the bullying has gone on for that long, I think it needs tough

action because it doesn't look like it will end soon enough.

Hope you get results

I wanted to add that my son, 13 - 7th grade, is being bullied this year, too.

He won't give me much information so I can talk to the school about it. I don't

know if it is because of the OCD yet or not, but definately teased because he's

in band. He has lost so many friends this year, so it's really hard on him.

Schools are supposed to be really cracking down on this bullying now...

It really makes me so sad and angry. The bully's have no idea what they are

doing to our kids.
