Hi Chynna,

I have a 7 yr old with OCD and Tourettes. He was also diagnosed at age 5 with

SID. The only time my son has relief from his tics is when he is asleep.

Are you sure these are tics? Maybe he's just jumping in his sleep? You haven't

noticed any movements during the day?

SID commonly does go with OCD, as well as Tourettes can go with OCD.

I know with my kids, the stress of starting school always makes their symptoms

worse.

I think so...my son has both. His tics are relatively mild, but definitely

there. I think that there are kids with soft neurological signs that have a

kind of syndrome or atypical development with or without mental health issues.

Tics occur more when anxious and anxiety very often occurs at night - maybe

that's the pattern you are seeing. Our pdoc kept Matt in his office a while so

they could talk and he eventually saw the tics for himself (tics can be elusive

when you need others to see them). He always tics more after school and at

dinner ect... It's like he can let it go then. Sensory dysfunction can also be

made worse by anxiety.

i think your right i see them more when his relaxing just before bed ...or

when hes watching tv..his finger twisting thu always present has intensified

this last week to...(i wish there was away to help with the blistering of

his fingers other the then just bandaids thu i do keep his nails as short as

possible) ...hoping the tics dont last long they look like they hurt..when i

ask him thu he says they dont

nope nothing during the day just when he starts relaxing for the 30 mins

before bed when he watch's his cartoons...and im pretty sure their tics

their very rhythmic he twists his head from side to side then wrinkles his

nose

My son takes Tenex 1mg at night for tics. He could probably be on a higher dose

because some of the tics are still evident (though mild), but he says he thinks

he's doing well enough on the present dose.

Hi - Are the Tics a sudden onset? Has he been ill at all recently, especially

with Strep? If so, you may want to explore PANDAS. Does he now have OCD as well

as SID? I'm not sure from your email. OCD is very different from a need to be

organized - it's about whether this " need " is debilitating or anxiety producing.

I'm sure you'll get a wide variety of responses here, as Tics, SID and OCD all

go together for a number of reasons, and all of which are valid. But whenever a

parent mentions a sudden onset, I just want to be sure that you are exploring

medical reasons as well as regular OCD therapy (ERP) and OT for the SID.

My daughter, now 8, had mild sensory issues all her life, but we never would

have really noticed them. However, when her OCD exploded, so did her sensory

issues. We have her in ERP therapy, we do weekly OT therapy for the SID, and we

deal with exploring and helping the underlying medical condition, of which there

can be quite a few.

Chynna,

I can sympathize with you with these awful tics. My son just got a new tic where

he is sticking his tongue out constantly, now today, he came home with another

tic, where he has to push his belly out as far as he can, and he can't stop. It

makes him feel like vomitting because he is pushing it out so far.
