For the most part it sounds like the CDC is throwing up its hands because it has no plans to handle any kind of real emergency. They aren't even going to tighten up at the border.

What is going to happen is that people in Mexico are going to panic if this thing turns big and come running to the US. Not all of them will be sick, but many will be and many will get infected in transit. Then the disease will spread throughout the US. This spread will be helped as people panic and flee areas where the infection rears up. Some of them will be sick and they will take the disease with them. All that moving around will also complicate any relief efforts because resources will have to be spend on those who fled rather than on those who are sick.

Since this disease seems to be striking the young and healthy the hardest, that is cause for concern. That is typically what the really bad diseases will do.

You can bet that certain terror groups will be watching our response, whatever it will be, to see how we handle it. They can use what could be a natural occurrence to plan their own biological attacks.

Interestingly, in the historic timeline for the Shadowrun RPG, in 2010 there was a global pandemic of a virus called VITAS, or Virally Induced Toxic Allergy Syndrome. its symptoms were Fever, Chills and Vomiting. IN that history, it started in India, but spread around the world in short order, killing roughly 25% of the population. Under 10% in the US died, but over 40% of Africa died. Kind of interesting that this is cropping up now.

On a realistic note, it would probably be a good idea to stock up on a couple of weeks of supplies. Very important but DON"T TELL ANYONE what you are doing. If people know that you have stockpiled food, if there is a shortage, many will think they have a right to your stash. Keep it secret.

Read King's "The Stand". During an epidemic or pandemic, there is really not much you can do to stop its spread when itis something like the flu. The most you can do is attempt to prevent panic by encouraging people to go about their business, albiet with caution.

Hand washing helps, but not much. The virus does not die instantaneously. Someone could use a public phone, sneeze on it, and then the next person could inhale the germs off of it.

It will spread quite a but until it plays itself out.

Mexico is to blame for this.

As much as it is a bad idea to spread prejudice around, their lacksidaisical attitude towards this outbreak is typical. The fact that so many have died is typical. None of the people who caught it in the states have died...because we have superior medical facility. Mexico came into existence around the same time as the colonies. Why have they not developed as we have?

You are forgetting three things:

1) Illegal aliens, as always, will come in and try to join relatives or friends already up here. They will come up whether they are sick or healthy or carrying but not presenting with the virus.

2) Those friends and relatives will try to heal the sick rather than expose them and risk deportation, thus they will get sick too.

3) The drug trade will cause people to smuggle their drugs over the border no matter what, and with them will come sick people.

Gee whiz, if the stupid Democrats would have taken pains to deport the illegals, and if the border patrol would have been stepped up with anti-drug patrols, the problem might not get very big.

We'll have to see what happens, but if this plays out the worst way, the Democrats will have a lot fewer people voting for them in the future because they will be dead from the flu.

I was going to suggest the same thing.

One thing to keep in mind is that if this spreads, it will spread exponentially. Thus the numbers will be small at first and for a little while, and then they will grow really big really fast.

People with weak immune systems will be particularly at risk.
