Guest guest
I pad is thin and portable, no flip up, just a screen. Tons of apps, many free, just like the Ipod. Down side is no cd/dvd player and I believe you have to connect to a computer much like with an Ipod to save info and back things up, or to get updates faster. I think it is basically like a huge Ipod. Very cool, great to take with ya, but not a replacement for a computer. But would be a laptop replacement if you had a desktop as well. Basically a big toy. Guest guest
Yep, I'm behind on technology as well. We don't even have cell phones yet -but I really do need one just to make contact with my 14 year old son. I've been a little skeptical of all the LeapPad and other high prices high tech toys that you plug in to your TV., etc. is quite happy with his books on tape. This I-PAD does look interesting. If it works for your child, why not? Marsha > > > > > > > I pad is thin and portable, no flip up, just a screen. Tons of apps, > > many free, just like the Ipod. Guest guest
No, and a laptop is not touch, it is all keyboard. The ipad is touch, which is a wonderful feature. Guest guest
The biggest thing about these apps are many are free or very cheap, and they are all touch responsive, no keyboard needed. That is what loves about the ipod, and ipad is pretty much a larger version of the ipod. You simply touch things to make it all work, and games are all run by touch as well. An example is a farming app that I do, you touch each plot to plow, then to plant, or to harvest. One of his apps is shooting balls at balls the same color. He has to grab the ball then aim it and throw it with his finger at the right color balls. If he does it correctly the ball blows up, if not, it just disappears, and more show up. The goal is to get rid of all the balls on the screen before they fill the screen. He loves that game. He loves sonic as well. He has some match games, math, tons of stuff on there are his. He too knows how to put his music playing then go play a game too. One advantage for me on the Ipod vs Iphone is that the volume is lower since it is meant to be used with earphones. hates earphones. (he wont use the ear buds for nothing) So… even with it turned up loud, it is not very loud, you can hear it, but it is not anything like the iphone on loud. Great in the car and so on. Guest guest
, Are you using the IPAD for homeschooling or entertainment or both? Sounds like you've found a few good reasons to justify the IPAD. Marsha > > > > I pad is thin and portable, no flip up, just a screen. Tons of apps, many > free, just like the Ipod. Guest guest
Sorry to jump in here so late. I have lots of apps for on my iphone but am considering getting her her own ipad for Christmas. (so I can maybe keep tabs on my phone! : ) ). The other option I'm considering is a wii. Anyone own both? Which would you recommend? My doughtier will be 9 just a few days before Christmas. Also, did someone post a link here recently that suggested apps for special needs? Most of the apps I have on my phone are geared toward pre-school, K-1 and are becoming too easy for her now. Can anyone suggest specific apps on a 1-3rd grade level? Great thread and Shari if you look on apple's website or probably even youtube you can see a great demo of the ipad. Also wanted to mention the proloquo2go app that is available. This app is very pricey, I think around $200 but could surely be a life changing opportunity for a nonverbal child. http://www.proloquo2go.com/ Hope > > > > > > > > I pad is thin and portable, no flip up, just a screen. Guest guest
Using it for both. But yes, I am seriously considering the ipad for Christmas for . He really loves the ipod. We do have a dynavox V for him, but he really prefers the interaction on the ipod/ipad type. It seems like work to get him to use his dynavox but he still thinks the ipod is fun, even though it is school as well as fun. Guest guest
I would be hard pressed to choose the iTouch or the Wii. We have both. We really like the physical/gross motor skills that many Wii games focus on (as well as the hand/eye coordination when using the controller), but the iTouch has more directly educational apparently and games, develops fine motor, and is portable.
