Right now I wouldn't trust the Russian one bit. Their military is on the point of collapse. I've seen articles that say that there are few buyers for Russian military equipment anymore because it is so poorly made and primitive compared to other equipment. Combined with very small Russian military orders, the military industries are about gone.

Combine that with Russia saying it is building an arctic force to secure its claims there.

Furthermore, Russia has been building up its nuclear arsenal. This isn't so much numbers as it is improve warheads that are more accurate and made to evade anti-missile defenses. Just recently Russia announced that it would be putting nuclear warheads back on its anti-ship missiles that can be fired by ships or subs. That means the weapons are a far greater threat to our navy since the missile can explode at a distance and still sink ships. If they put these on their supersonic anti-ship missiles, such a weapon could be in range before the ship defense systems could react, and would certainly be out of range of the Phalanx system.

Remember, the Russian economy is in trouble and they see threats all around. Many nations in the past have started wars when in such a position. We should be very wary of them.

History tells a revealing story though. During WWII, the Russians moved their

factories east and churned out huge numbers of armour very quickly, and even

though they could not get it to the front lines quickly enough, they had no

problem throwing lines of unarmed military at German machine guns to delay their

advance.

The Russians would be willing to fight defensively this way again, and even with

satellites, we have no way of knowing if they are not arming conventionally as

they did historically. Like the germans, they could be manufacturing in massive

underground bunkers, and they may be producing quality equipment and merely

selling off the junk they have been using up until this time.

Russians have never been loathe to act ruthlessly, but let us remember also that

the US has been the only power in the world to actually use an atomic bomb for

military purposes - twice.

Having a weapon does not mean it will be used. I cannot see the Russians using a

bomb against an equally matched superpower. I COULD see it used against a

country that did not have atomic bombs.

Drop one bomb with this ultimatum: " Join us or be destroyed. "

How would the rest of the world respond to seeing little countries eaten up that

way?

Why, they would do nothing of course. THEY would not want to risk an atomic war

over some comparatively small countries with paltry population.
