For my dd, the waxing and waning happens frequently. For instance, she

might have a really couple bad days during the week and then a few days of

doing ok. When her medication was working better, it was more a few bad

days a month then things would turn around.

Thank you for your response. My first reason for suspecting it to be the

PANDA type was because of the 2 earlier incidents when she was about 3 and

4. At that time the doctor mentioned that sometimes obsessive type behavior

can be linked to strep. I looked back on my word documents and see that in

Sept. '04 and Feb. '05 I copied things related (obviously after a doctor

visit with strep). Both incidents were very short lived. So when this

happened so suddenly like it did, I finally snapped to the possibility that

it could be linked to the eye stye, which was huge. But I also sent her

away to camp (so she would do something fun for the summer) that week and

she was very homesick which I felt bad about. I think she was too young for

6 days away and not going with anybody she knew. I did it because my

husband had surgery the end of May and we had to cancel the plans we had

made to go to Sea World in San . So the infection and the trauma of

being away were at the same time.

>Hi Beth,

I'm only familiar with PANDAS from what I've read here and recently in the

media (yay, more awareness!), but regular OCD does wax and wane. Sometimes

predictably (illness, stress, etc) and sometimes unpredictably. ERP

treatment is the best known, and really can prevent relapse, however.

Your grandaughter is lucky to have so much love.

Oh, thank you Coleen for responding. Every bit of information I get is so

appreciated. We are so lost here. My only doubt on the PANDA issue at all

was knowing in my heart that we felt our daughter had some definite problems

and possibly there were some problems in the family on the biological dad's

side. I don't know whether the pediatricians will work with me on long term

antibiotics, which scares me as things are soooooo much better than a month

ago. I've been looking at sites on the internet thinking I might have to

buy them there, which really worries me. Do the antibiotics help your

children greatly? She has had so much to deal with in her young life. My

heart just bleeds for what some of the families here are going through. I

just pray that one day they will find a miracle. I sent out that video to

the site because I was hoping it would give hope to some who needed it.

Beth,

What you described with your daughter is one of the most clear cut PANDAS

cases I have ever read. I have been dealing with PANDAS for 8 years with my

children. Your daughter has almost every single PANDAS symptom. Here are two

websites with tons of PANDAS info and lots of parents with lots of

experience and advice regarding PANDAS.

www.pandasnetwork.org and www.latitudes.org (there is a PANDAS section).

It is really good that she is currently on antibiotics, but 5 days on and 5

days off is not enough at this point to treat strep or prevent it. I would

really recommend doing daily Zithromax for the near future. How much does

your daughter weigh? A common prophylactic dose for Zithromax is 250mg/day.

After the child is on that dose for a good long time, cutting it back to

125mg/day works for some kids. There are other antibiotic options if your

physician won't give you Zith, such as Keflex.

I am glad your physician was aware that PANDAS existed b/c unfortunately so

many children are being misdiagnosed as just OCD or Tourete's and the strep

connection is never found. Many PANDAS children will have negative throat

cultures. The theory is that the strep is elsewhere in their body. There are

many places bsides the throat where strep hides.

Wow, Beth, I don't have a PANDAS child, but your daughter sure sounds

like she does have PANDAS. I would try to locate a Dr. that is very

familiar with PANDAS and have her on long term antibiotics. Good for

you for researching and figuring out the link.

I'd love to hear her progress!

Hi,have you had a Md rule out Pandas? There is Md in Marlton NJ and she  is the

Md that was on   tv and she helped Sammy in " Saving Sammy " Dr.Nicolaides, phone

#- My daughter is 6 1/2 and has ocd.We don't know if it's Pandas but

we are going to see Dr.Nicolaides.If it is not she sounds like she will be able

to tell us how best to treat our daughter .We are fortunate because her office

is about 2 hours from us.(She does do phone conferences)My daughter said one

day " I'm strange I do things that other kids do not do " I think all kids with ocd

should be ruled out for Pandas.Take care,Steph

My son's OCD and tourette's is like a constant roller coaster.

He can have times where he can bearly get through a day, and periods when we

hardly notice anything.

One thing we have noticed is that we can predict, from his behavior, when he is

getting sick. At one point, he wanted either my husband or I to be constantly

with him but had not compalained about feeling unwell. One afternoon, he

commented that we didn't understand how bad he was feeling, so my husband took

him to the clinic. Turned out he had an ear infection, a burst ear drum and

bronchitis.

His wanting us close by seems to always precede an illness.

My question is how to get teachers to truly understand how he is feeling? Jake

is functioning beyond his grade 6 level. His sister was in the split class with

him last year, and would notice little tics here and there. But the teacher has

said over and over that she never notices anything. Because he holds it in all

day, it comes out with a vengence at home, making it difficult for him to finish

homework. Trynig to explain this to his teacher is soooo hard.

Any suggestions?
