Another shade of Vietnam and also Korea.

In Vietnam, we let the VC and NVA have sanctuary in Laos and Cambodia. They could attack our forces and then run across the border. Their main supply route, the so called Ho Chi Minh Trail, ran through these countries as well. In addition, they even used these safe havens to position heavy artillery and fire across the border at our positions, and we couldn't shoot back.

In Korea, the same situation existed with China, though mostly only with aircraft. Chinese aircraft were based north of the Yalu River in Chinese territory. From there, they could sortie out, fight a little with our planes, and they run back for their safe haven.

In both cases, the political idea was that we could not go after these safe havens for fear of broadening the war. Never mind that in Vietnam, the North Vietnamese had invaded Laos and Cambodia and set up their supply lines and bases by force. In Korea, China was already in the ground war and so attacking the airfields could not have broadened the war more than it was.

That said, there was fear that the Russians might get involved, but then they already were too. Russian pilots fought ours in Korea and maybe Vietnam and they had ground advisors in both wars as well. Extending attacks against the Ho Chi Minh Trail or the Chinese air bases should not have made that much of a difference. Sure the leftist global media would have howled, but they were doing that already.

Obama should pay attention to the reports. The Taliban is becoming very aggressive in Pakistan. Just recently they have been carrying out major suicide attacks and even direct assaults against our supply assets in country, assaults which are becoming more successful. If we give them refuge from our forces in Pakistan, the Taliban and Al Qeada could simply focus their attacks against our supply assets there and shut them down. That would effectively knock out our efforts in Afghanistan, especially if Russia denies our supply routes into former Soviet Bloc countries. Already they only allow humanitarian type supplies flown via the route that passes over Georgia.

Its not surprising though. First they follow the FDR "how to screw up your economy" manual, so now they are dusting off the old "how to lose a war" manual of the 1950's and 1960's.
