Guest guest
Dear Kassi, Sondra, lynn, I happened to stumble onto a hyperacussis message board, and as I read, it described 's debilitating sound issues to a T. The big concern I have is that she's scheduled for AIT in December, and some of the Hyperacussis sufferers have had AIT and were WORSE after the therapy! I have to determine whether she has sound sensitivity-just the component of Autism, or true hyperacussis. I 've done some research and written some letters, and have some phone calls to make. Just wondered if any of you are familiar with this problem and/or had any thoughts about it? I certainly don't want her hooked up to the wrong equipment and have her left with more painful hearing than before. Thanks in advance, and Warm wishes! Guest guest
I dont know how to tell the difference, but...if you arent sure about a treatment...DONT DO IT! There's probably a reason your gut is freaking out. Guest guest
Hi Joan, It is most likely that she does not have hyperacusis, but rather, hyper-acute hearing. This is the case with most autistic people with sound sensitivity. Has she always had these same difficulties? My daughter was definitely born with hyper-acute hearing. Generally hyperacusis is the result of some sort of insult resulting in sound intolerance, such as chronic exposure to noise, head injury or a side effect from drugs. If she has had experience with any of those, resulting in tinnitus, then she might possibly have hyperacusis IN ADDITION to hyper-acute hearing. Most autistic people respond well to AIT and other sound therapies, while those with tinnitus/ hyperacusis (but not autism) do not. I would say unless you have a good reason to suspect tinnitus due to an injury or insult such as I described, then I would go ahead with the AIT. We have used in-home Tomatis type CDs with my daughter and it has done wonders. > Dear Kassi, Sondra, lynn, > I happened to stumble onto a > hyperacussis > message board, and as I read, it described 's debilitating sound > issues to a T. Guest guest
Are you having increased seizures? I hear that surgery can work wonders... Guest guest
I had a friend in high school who had that surgery done and it was a miraculous difference! Long recovery though. And then afterwards he started doing drugs that brought them back...but I know you are smarter than that! Guest guest
Yeah. I'm having a totally rediculous number of seizures, was in the hospital for status epilepticus, and am out of meds to try that don't have a contraindication. Woohoo. At the end of the month I go for an extended EEG to start the surgury evaluation process...at this point, they can take just about whatever part of my brain they want. 20 seizures a day is too many. 8 is average lately. blargh. Guest guest
What are the cd's you talked about ? Also what is AIT ? I would like to know what I can do for my daughter whom is 6 and is so sound sensitive most of the time she runs from the house to the van covering her ears. If she hears ANY loud vehicles she freaks on us. Pleading to stop them from coming. Toilets in public are another big issue. Is there something real important I should be doing now? Some little things are just to much to bare sometimes. and Shellbe 6 ASD
