Dear NDSC Members and Friends,

As many of you know, the NDSC's Self Advocate Council recently sent a letter to Shaffner, Chairman and CEO of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, regarding the Academy's Emmy nomination of the song " Down Syndrome Girl " from the Fox television program, " Family Guy " .

Yesterday, NDSC received the following response from Mr. Shaffner:

Dear Self Advocate Council, Thank you for your letter bringing your concerns about the " Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics " category to my attention. First, let me assure you that the nominated song " Down Syndrome Girl " from " FAMILY GUY " will not be aired on the Primetime Emmy telecast or on the telecast of the Creative Arts Awards.  The Television Academy is always sensitive to these types of issues and had already planned not to air this song.

Thank you for your excellent work in promoting understanding and awareness of the nature of Down syndrome. Yours truly,  ShaffnerChairman and CEOAcademy of Television Arts & Sciences

The Creative Arts Awards, to which Mr. Shaffner refers, were held on August 21st.  Fortunately, " Down Syndrome Girl " did not receive an award. We are so proud of, and grateful to, our Self Advocate Council members for standing up for what they - and we - believe to be right!

Though this particular issue has reached a successful resolution, our work goes on. Since the Emmy situation arose, NDSC has responded to Aniston's use of the " r-word " on " Live with Regis and " .  We will continue to reach out to the entertainment industry in opposing offensive, stereotypical portrayals of people with intellectual disabilities. And, of course, we continue to advocate year-round in Washington, DC, for important legislation, such as the bill to end the use of restraints, seclusion and aversive interventions in schools.

However, we can't do it without you.   By being an NDSC member, and by springing into action when called upon, you make a real difference to our families and to our nation.

Thank you for getting involved!
