I agree. Most students are there marking time, doing just enough to get by, which in public school isn't much. Even when I went to college, it was amazing how many students were sleeping because they were hung over or whatever, or they were chatting about the upcoming parties. Small wonder that the grade sheets typically showed one or two "A's" a couple of "B's" some "C's" and the majority "D's" and "F's." The college I went to, many students were only there because the parents said go to college or get a job, go in the army or get out of the house. A few had jobs and were trying, but not all.

Most people just can't be bothered to think for themselves. Most of this is the fault of the school because they don't really teach thinking, just regurgitation of mostly useless facts, useless without the ability to think and analyze. Its really not that hard to teach people to do this. It isn't that hard to learn to read, process and analyze and compare what you read and generate your own ideas. Most people just learn to read and process enough to do an immediate task, but not beyond that, meaning a 4th grade reading level. Adding the extra steps would be easy, especially if it was made like a game. If this was taught beginning in 4th grade and reinforced through 12th, it would be second nature for almost everyone and they wouldn't even realize they were doing it.

Like you, I read a little bit of everything. You never know when a little tidbit of information might turn out to be useful either by itself or simply as a part of your knowledge base that helps you synthesize other data.

Kids tend to sleep through school. they regard it as "doing time" until they can do what they really want to. I never saw school that way. I wanted to learn as much as I could in case I needed it later in life. Feeling the pinch at the grocery store? Make dinner for $10 or less.
